My LG DVD Writer cant read cds / dvds / anything in windows but it can boot from a windows cd when i had to install windows. Any suggestions? When trying to read a cd / dvd it just the cd just spins around uber fast making a really loud noise and after a bit of not-responding it says the cd has 0 bytes free space and 0 bytes used.

I had the EXACT same issue with my LG DVD writer today. I just upgraded its firmware - there was a new one on the LG site. Sorted it out for me fortunately.

I've just returned my new LG DVD Writer (Super Multi Lightscribe) it was giving me hell, does'nt read most rewritable especially verbatim when it does it takes munites to read, what pissed me the most when writing a dvd movie takes exactly 35 min. (16 X speed), I'm like LG my a** I retuned the bi***h bought myself GIGABYTE.

Uh ya i updated the firmware to the latest version and the update was successful but the problem persists. Any further suggesstions?

Which model ???.

A few years back LG drives used to be killed whenever you installed Mandrake 9.0 because as part of the install process they sent a IDE reset command to the drive.

Since Windows does not implement this command in it's CDROM driver , the LG programmers in their infinite wisdom decided to use the same command as a signal to erase the firmware of the drive in preparation for a firmware upload.

Needless to say it was a very dumb idea.

Been only using Sony (Lite-On) drives.
