Linux Mint ... Overheating and fan going nuts on laptop

Mine is a I5 (think it is Sandy Bridge) and I dont seem to have this problem on Mint 12. Been checking my temp on Xsensors and it seems to hover between 45 and 55 degrees.

But are you running Gnome or KDE?

45-55 is high in my opinion--what is the baseline on Windows? mine is around 39-42'C at rest; with browsing it shoots to 45-47'C; with Flash running it goes to 55"; or installing a program it goes to 65'C.

Maybe laptops runs a little hotter? Smaller fan, smaller vent and very little ventilation space in the case could maybe contribute to it?

EDIT: Just checked now and mine is currently 40 degrees. But it is a nice cool day in JHB today so maybe that is why it is running a bit cooler today :-)
 
Update: I have just installed Precise Pangolin 12.04 LTS daily build 2012-02-11 with the most recent kernel update 3.2.0-15-generic. I can report that there is not need to add those kernel parameters now. it is cool as a cucumber! and fan is behaving nicely.
I am running this on Dell Vostro 3700 nvidia gforce 330m.

Give it a try--and please, also try the Gnome-Shell DE with the extra trimmings from Gnome-Shell extensions.
 
Ok--just to test, I added those kernel parameters to grub, what I have noticed is that, tempt fluctuations are minimal; no drastic highs on loading webpages in Firefox or Chrome; flash on YouTube pushes it to 65'C; previously it would go up to 77'C on my PC. I am not sure if this kernel related or just better integration of browser with rest of system.

Perhaps someone else can test and report their experience?
