hey everybody

I have just started with linux.
Installed Ubuntu 7.04

I have a vodacom 3G card: Huawei E620
laptop: hp nx9010

How do i get internet going??
I dont know any commands, (i use the terminal program, yes?).

Can anybody point me in the right direction..
I downloaded the wvdial.conf thing - clicked on install, tried to follow the writen install file.. but some commands failed.

Umm ja, like i said. a virgin.

help please!

Well, for starters: what were the commands that failed, and what output did they produce (that indicates that they failed)? Did you download TazzTux's wvdial.conf and type "wvdial huawei_e620 internet 3gonly" (or something similar); or did you try the Vodafone GUI thing?

ok, so i have extracted the wvdial app to my home folder.
then i ran the wvdial (dubble clicked on it)

then i ran the first command in the linux howto guide:
/etc/init.d/pcmcia start

it gave me: bash: /etc/init.d: isa a directory

i went on with the rest of the commands to see if something happens, but nothing happens, but the terminal screen does nothing after putting in the rest of the commands..

It is painful to know so little about linux.. :o

here is what happened in the terminal:

danie@danie-laptop:~$ /etc/init.d pcmcia start
bash: /etc/init.d: is a directory
danie@danie-laptop:~$ find /dev/ | grep ttyS
find /dev/ grep | ttyUSB
wvdial option internet 3gonly 384k

It always helps to type the commands correctly - for instance, the '/' between 'init.d' and 'pcmcia' really does need to be there, and it does make a big difference when the '|' comes before 'grep'! The wvdial.conf that you download is not an application - it's a configuration file that must be copied to /etc/wvdial.conf.

thanx V3G

will try and come back..
(but first i need to study for tonight test!)

o, and chiskop, haha, ja, i see what you mean..hehe

Hey ShadowGlow

I feel your pain. The terminal when you start is quite a daunting thing!

Try also to login as root or to switch to root. I think in feisty the command is "sudo su"

Then you won't have restrictions in getting things done that you need to do.

BTW I'm also a linux newbie. I think you remain a linux newbie for a few years.......I can assure you it's addictive though....

SUCCESS!!!

hahaha..
I feel evil.. ok, maybe thats taking it a bit far :p

i still have a question.
how do i know if i'm at hsdpa speeds?
i used the following command to connect:

wvdial huewai_e620 internet

is "internet" hsdpa speed? or should i follow the "extra steps for the HSDPA card" section..

Thanx to everybody that helped me!

Good question - 'internet' just specifies which APN (Access Point Name) you connect to; and I don't know what the default speed is for the Huawei E620. Probably will be 3G, and HSDPA if your signal is strong enough. Maybe try adding '3gonly' to the wvdial command and see if you can notice a difference?

ok, with the above mentioned "internet" command i get 80 to 100 (peak) kB/s.
so thats 650kb/s to 800kb/s. Definitely HSDPA. (on windows it was always 400 to 600kb/s)

will try the 3gonly and let you know whats the difference in speeds.

I'm only getting 3G speeds atm - I'll bang head later to try to get HSDPA. I'm running on a gentoo server, using wvdial, but nozomi didn't compile correctly.......I was going to try something else.
