That is a major caveat - adding more ram later on can breathe new life into a tired system like nothing else.

I agree... BUT with the new macbook Air... the RAM is soldered onto the mainboard... cannot be increased later...

The new MacBook Air is an exercise of proprietary engineering. While you can easily access everything once you remove the proprietary screws, you can’t really replace any component with an off-the-shelf part, unless you source it from Apple or someone involved in Apple-based repair (*cough*). Most components — RAM included — are soldered to the logic board, preventing them from being replaced. We definitely recommend users to buy the 4GB RAM version of the Air, as the paltry 2GB already borders on obsolete by today’s standards.

The one standout in this proprietary sea is the 64 GB SSD. It’s not locked down like the rest of the components, although it is a very slim and unusual form factor (for a hard drive). It’s attached to the logic board with what appears to be a new mini-SATA (mSATA) connector, which brings hope to super-slim-laptop-hackers all across the globe. This may enable some crafty tinkerers to rig a larger drive inside the Air, provided they can fit everything within the tight confines of the .68″ thick case.

Handed 'down' - my dad got the first one, my sister the second, this last one went to my niece... Makes tech support a dream! They"re all on the same platform so can help each other allowing me to stay sane :)

LOL... get a new 17" MacBookPro... and adopt me .. ;}
 
Ok. So I've decided that 15" is too big. I am leaning towards the 13" Macbook Pro over the Air - it has faster processor, more RAM, DVD drive, longer battery life and is upgradeable later.

Only thing I'm not sure about is the display. Apart from the resolution, is there any other difference?

It's the same quality display, but lower resolution. DVD drive - I hardly ever use it!

It does have a faster processor, and is more upgradeable. You can even upgrade the RAM to 8gb. However the Macbook Air will actually be faster in most situations due to it's SSD. Ah decisions decisions!

An SSD is also an option for the MBP. (A 512GB ssd adds $1400 to the build price :D)
 
Yeah rather just buy a Sandforce SSD and put it in yourself. Faster and cheaper.

In that case taking the MBP with the intention of upgrading to a SSD when the budget allows it is a no-brainer. I think I'll use the DVD quite a bit.
