Merlin U630 om MTN?

I there any way to set up this card, as supplied with Vodacom 3G contracts, to work on the MTN GPRS or maybe even 3G network? I did try out an MTN prepaid sim card in mine, but could not connect, except to the GSM network for sending sms's.
Do I also need to "data enable" the sim card, like for Vodacom sims?

Intersting I did not try it, I would have just assumed it must work. I was thinking of trying the same thing, since Vodacom still doesn't seem to have the prepaid data bundles working.

I would also very much like to know the answer to these two questions.

Will the Novatel and Option cards work with MTN 3G

and does a normal prepaid SIM card work for that, the ones you can buy for 1 Rand at checkers?

Also do you have to activate it by calling perhaps?

I don't have an MTN SIM yet, did you try to call their support to ask this kedul?

Well I know for sure that a Vodacom prepaid card also works. And I just searched the web and found a Nashua mobile deal with this and mtn packages (althought the modem on the pic is blue ) at:

MTN Pre paid cards work as follows:

1. Get card
2. Load airtime (Pep gives 10%discount)
3. Put card in GPRS enabled cellphone (Other phones, does not work)
4. Buy data bundle by phoning 555.
5. Phone 173 or 555 and pray that an operator comes to your assistance quickly.
6. Ask them to enable GPRS on sim. They will send you an instruction, save and sim is activated.(this does not work if your phone does not support GPRS)
7. Now you can put the sim into another dievice and you should get GPRS/EDGE depending on the coverage in your area.

MTN Prepaid data is a lot cheaper than Vodacom prepaid. Vodavom runs on R2/MB & MTN gets cheaper, the bigger the bundle you buy. See http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=11468

Yes and I tried that on a Nokia 9210i Communicator.

No luck. I had to go to someone with a phone that is GPRS enabled otherwise the saving instruction on the card does not work. Voda cards can be done over the network.

I still prefer MTN but we can all learn from the competition.

OK I dont have a GPRS enabled cellphone and *123# also doesnt work, so I will data enable it tomorrow on someone elses phone. BUT does this mean I will need a GPRS enabled cellphone every time that I want to buy a data bundle by phoning 555?

GPRS enabling settings

An addition to my earlier post.

On a GPRS enabled phone you need to enter *123*13# you will then get an sms to enable WAP settings. You need to save this settings and if asked a password, you need to enter 1234.

Most of this instruction will be sent to you in the sms after sending *123*13#

I just had to do it again as I got an extra Pre paid card as my 100 MB data bundle has run out and the bundle only expires @ the end of the month. In stead of paying out of bundle tarif till monthend, I got new card plus new bundle. I needed to activate GPRS and this nescessitate the other phone procedure.

Now it will be easy, as I just load airtime and convert to data bundle of choice and if the data runs out before expirydate, I just take the other card and repeat the process. no need for the other phone proces. Shlep but it works.

Ai ai ai, You know. Do you work for MTN? If you are the you are supposed to know that you must dial *123*13# not just *123#.
