Hi Everyone,

What I want to know is:
1) What is the most cost effective way of getting ADSL for decent online gaming. I know about the Telscum line rental of R100p/m and Im considering getting HomeDSL192 at R240, totalling +-R350 of my money in Telscums greedy little paws. Is this package decent for online gaming, with 2 users, on the same connection, playing Guild Wars??

and my main concern

2) What is the best\recommended ISP package I should choose. From what I can gather on this forums is to go for a SAIX reseller. Should I go shaped or un-shaped? How many GBs will 2 users use, playing Guild Wars (installed from CDs) 3 days a week for 5 hours.

I currently have the option to get 128k ISDN, but according to my calculations it is going to get VERY expensive playing Guild Wars 3 times a week for 5 hours a day. Does anybody think this option is worth it?

Thanks for your time.

You are looking closer to R370 excluding any ISP fees and a R404 installation fee.

Unshaped is also the best route to go once you have choosen an ISP, however it is not the cheapest route and can jump from R249 a month to 679 a month (TelkomSA actually breaks it down nicely at http://www.telkomsa.net/products/adsl_telkom_internet.jsp One of the only half decent things they have done)

I have not played GW since BETA and there I obviously had to download tons of things since each new section had to download. However I do play WoW...a lot, and my worst so far was about 190 hours for the month. During that time I got close to about 1 gig data for my WoW playing alone (looking at Max 40 megs an hour).

I am assuming GW is pretty much the same once you have all the data downloaded. So for 2 people.. you should be looking at 80 megs an hour so from what you said, you might be looking at 4.8 Gigs worst case. Of course using 40 megs an hour per peson is HIGHLY unlikely.

If you take my case of 190 hours playing wow compared to your expected 60.. count on 2 gigs for 2 people as more than enough.

If you plan on playing FPS games though.. it will change again and you can eat through your 3 gigs (normal 3 gig account) in a weekend with a game like BF2.

I would suggest getting 192k as you said, remember it costs nothing to upgrade but telkom will charge you to downgrade. So if its not good enough then you can change later

Lastly as to the ISP... VERY hard to say. Right now I'm actually with Telkom ISP because I'm not sure what all the other ISP's are up to with all the funny games telkom have been playing so I'm waiting it out until I actually know what is what. I then use Nukecap's VPN to get low latency when playing online games on international servers and it works out cheaper for me than unshaped

But I am sure you will have tons of people telling you soon enough which ISP is better :D
