I lost my phone. I am only elegible for a new phone in 2 months time. I faxed the required blacklist form through a week ago, visited the service provider shop last week and re-faxed the form through today and still my handset is NOT blacklisted. So much for discouraging theft.

I need a new phone. They tell me I need to buy a handset cash as I am only elegible in 2 months time. I argue that if I pay upfront for those two months, I should be elegible - not so say they.

I ask about cancelling - I am told that I need to pay the full term of the contract then pay an ADDITIONAL R1700-00 as my phone (an Imate) was subsidised. WHAT A JOKE. So I though for myself & decided to pay the full contract and not the R1700, get a new phone AND new contract from the competition (since MTN don't want to help me).

But the point is: What's all this nonsense about paying R1700 for my phone?

All I do is pay R350 once off to downgrade to the cheapest contract (I am on a procall 220 or something like that), pay it up, hand in my written notice for the contract term then take out a new contract elsewhere and get my new subsidised phone - considering a new phone costs as much as R2000 (or MUCH more in the case of my IMate), this will cost less than half - and of course MTN loses a previously happy customer... Considering my office is prepared to chip in $200 towards a new phone, it's the way to go.

R1700 for my "subsidised phone" to cancel the contract... ha - what a joke.

Ed, it's cazy I know. I was also a happy MTN customer and "lost" my phone 3 months before I was eligible for an upgrade. MTN would not budge so about 3 years ago I became a happy vodacom subscriber. I'm on Talk 500 so mtn lost around R900 per month for the last 3 years! You gotta hit them where it hurts most!!!

Where ever posible I recomend vodacom to my clients these days, infact...change now and you'll be much happier.

I have a client who insisted on an mtn data card and during installation I discovered that it will not share the internet connection on the LAN like the Vodacom card does. Screwed by MTN again (for the next 2yrs)!

Change! And write them a letter telling them why you've moved to their competition! And that reminds me, I need to write in again and remind MTN that they've now lost around R32 400 over a measly 3 months that I was fully prepaired to pay for!

HaHaHa!!! I love it!

My sister used to be on a MTN contract (it's was on my name - I paid for it and she used it, a gift subscription). Anyway, her phone got stolen a couple of months before it has to be renewed (happened on a weekend). She had insurance, so I wasn't worried about getting a new phone from MTN. What really bothered me was that when the phone was stolen, she called me and we reported it to the police and got a case number within a hour. I then phoned MTN to report the phone as stolen (to prevent outgoing calls, as there was about R250 worth of airtime left - was a topup contract) and to get the phone blacklisted, but they FLAT OUT REFUSED because I had to call my service provider (Nashua Mobile). As you might also know, Nashua Mobile is closed on weekends, so I had to wait for Monday to report it to Nashua Mobile. When I asked them about it, they said I was supposed to call MTN and when I called MTN in the week to speak to some manager or something, he insisted his people did the right thing to refer me to the service provider.

When we got the itemized bill at the end of the month, all the airtime was used AFTER I called MTN the first time, so they could have saved me the money and trouble if they cared about their customers at all. I wan't too worried about the R250, but if it wasn't a top-up contract, I doubt MTN or Nashua Mobile would have reimbursed me for the potential thousands of rands the thief might have used. I also had to fax them the blacklisting form three times before they claimed they got it and gave me a confirmation number.

When her contract expired, she moved to Vodacom, and so did I a couple of months after. So remember, stay away from MTN and Nasua Mobile - they don't care about their customers.

Been with both companies for over 10 years now and have to agree with you. Chose MTN out of principle to stay as far away as reasonably possible from Telkom, but wonder if it was worth it. And I think I'll just cancel the contracts as they come to the end of their terms.

Could one have a limit put on your contract to prevent thiefs from bankrupting you when your phone is stolen? Happened to a friend of mine - a smash-and-grabber stole her phone. She could only get through to the right people about an hour later. Then the shock came at the end of the month. The bastard made continuous international calls up till the point when the phone was disabled. The thief was probably selling "cheap international calls" I'd imagine. Anywayz, she had to pay in R2000...

Hhhhmmm
Actually Nashua Mobile does work on weekends and on holidays. Their call center is open during those days
