MTU settings for GPRS

just a quick thought here,
I remember the days gone by with dial up there was a MTU setting you could tweek to improve the stability of your connection, well it was actualy a packet size adjustment.
has any one played with this setting ?
theory, the larger the packet the more info you get per tcp/ip transmition but the more you loose if the packet is not accepted.
after about 2 hours on GPRS I get 0 errors.
if the packet is too small then you will be loosing out on valuable bits.
techis in here will have a far better idea how it works.
