Hi guys

I have issues with Windows media players and Itunes.

Itunes does not automatically scan your music folder for updates, if I do a mnaul update it creates duplicates and stuffs up the libary.

WMP does the scanning issue but does not support mp4 files. i have downloaded a plugin but they want money for it and the tags are still stuffed up.

Which program can one use that will solve these issues. Looking for something that support both formats, mp3 and mp4 as well as provide a look up service that assign the names to music files correctly? looking for a solution that does me to program anything, fiddle with thsi trick here and that smokel there.

You can prevent iTunes duplicating imports either by deleting the original after you import ;) or by removing the tick from "Copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library" inside itunes.

But dont do both! :)

EDIT - I prefer letting iTunes manage my music. When ever I need a copy of a song I then just drag it to the desktop.

I have all my music on an external drive that plugs into my machine. I dont want itunes to copy the music to the itunes folder because their simply is not enough drive space there.

If i download something and put it into the folder that keep for the music will itunes pick it up and add it to the libary- at the moment it does not.

Didnt you already move your itunes folder over to the external?

No had itunes on the machine but never used. Then a while ago I moved all my music onto the external drive and also copied some music from a mate. His music was all in mp4 format so i then stared trying to use itunes, now i have duplicates everywhere. Also Itunes does not seem to find music if i add it to the external drive.

If you like I can try and help you straighten out itunes but if you'd prefer to use something else thats cool too. :)

Dont mind using Itunes, just need it to do what I want. I am sure that I am not using it right. My issues cant be unique in the world.

I also keep my music on an external hdd so I guess the difference lies in the way we handle downloads. All my downloads regardless of the app go into a central repository. From there I import the music into iTunes and the delete the original once iTunes had copied it over.

Let me start again with itunes from afresh. How do i delete all the Libary info and get it to scan and create a library from the existing music on the external drive?

Ok, had a browse around the apple itunes support site.

The key seems to be importing stuff to the external drive via itunes. Not exactly intuitive but i might just get it to work:D

Thanks Bwana
