Ok now its really starting to annoy me....

The phone is lying on a table, slider closed, camera cover closed all apps exited......:camera activates.

Just keeps on doing it by itself. Anyone else by some miniscule chance had this experience??

Never.. sounds scary hehe

Ghost in the Machine was a title of an X Files episode from Season 1... stupid fact for the day :)

Sounds like someone is spying on you from a remote location by taking pictures of your environment and what you may be up to and working on. Best to implement counter measures. Point your phone's camera to some akward scenes that will confuse the spy - or put the phone in some container - or ... :D

Some N95 fanboys here (called piesangs ;)) may argue that the N95 has advanced AI features that may cause this :D

On a more serious note:- You don't say which camera activates (front or back) if its the back one and the slide cover is closed, I would suspect that it may be that the switch connected to the opening mechanism that may be dodgy and not making good contact. This would cause the N95 to jump into camera mode at seemingly random intervals. I have seen no reports in any of the the previous or current firmware releases, where the camera 'self' activates.
