Need help in connecting two spots 3 km apart wirelessly

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum, and not much experienced in wifi. I am writing this post to seek for help in connecting wirelessly two spots that are about 3 km apart from one another.

I live in a big metropolitan city. The thing is that I own a shop, which I want to be able to monitor by video feed (security camera), and also to be able to manage the lights from the computer back home which is on the other side of the city. While both the monitoring and light control from distance are somehow solved problems, I don't yet have any clear option for the way to connect the two sites via wireless connection. And given that I am not much experienced in this field, I would need some dummies help with this like, equipments for use, line of sight requirements (which I don't exactly know what it means, is it that the antennas must see each other?), and any other tips that you would find useful.

Sounds like you need WiMax rather than Wifi. There are some frequencies used that will extend that far.

Yes line of sight just means that the antennas can "see" each other. If they can it should be relatively simple to set something up. Next option is if you can place hardware at another point that both sites can "see". If you don't have any line of sight over 3km wifi probably isn't going to help you much.

Cheapest and easiest option would be to use 2 local only dsl accounts, and the local free dynamic dns host to set up a vpn. You can purchase wifi equipment for NLoS (non line of sight), but it's incredibly expensive, bandwidth after distance and penetration (if it penetrates at all) might not be worth while. I'm not sure if you can deploy Wimax over unlicensed frequencies (unlikely), you'd best ask the folks that deal with ICASA and their BS.

Ok, thanks for your posts. So that pretty much means that I should not opt for wireless in trying to connect the sites given that the antennas under no circumstance can see each other, although I'm still thinking of any possibility to accomplish this, but the premises look vague. And I'm not even thinking about using nlos equipments.

So probably it would be better to take Cad's suggestion to use dsl accounts to create a vpn, or to try and connect the two sides through internet. By the way, what would you think about using the internet as a means to connect the two computers with one another? I have a wired adsl connection at home, and I can get wireless internet connection at the shop through my laptop (there's a couple of hotspots that cover that area). Do you think it's worth trying to do something through that?

What City you in?

If you in a city where a WUG is present there is a possiblity of connecting the 2 nodes to the WUG and creating a VPN and not giving any of your money to telkom.
if is it purely for what you state above i cant see why a WUG would be obverse to it.

This can easily be done with http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/MeshNetworking if you don't have LOS.
Install a http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/RepeaterNode to repeat the signal over obstacles. If you have LOS a http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/LinksysWrt54g can be used or interfaced with the mesh.
