I am planning on installing ADSL at home and we will be 3 users on the network.

I was wondering how can I enforce a cap (i.e 1GB each) without using a dedicated server?

Well the first thing you need to do is move out of Bloemfontein cause that is just bad for your health....no just kidding.

Seriously I don't know how you can do it without having a dedicated server. Unless you allow the users to connect through one of the systems on the network. For example your machine will be the dedicated machine connected to the internet and the other two will just connect via your machine. Should be able to control their bandwidth that way. That's my 2c's.

Cheers

If you are in some sort of house-sharing situation, like student digs, then maybe you could just tell everybody to get their own ISP account and then everyones dials through the ADSL modem?

In that way, the user has control of how much he/she downloads and pays.

My 2 cents but we don't carry those any more so its now 5 cents

Thanks guys!

You're right Nic, house-sharing situation. But too expensive to have each one have their own account.. plus I won't use more than 1GB anyway since I do most of my downloading at work :)

Just need it for MSN, e-mail, browsing etc.

The thing is I want to get a 384/128 line with a 3GB Cybersmart account (R150). If I buy a 1GB account it will cost me more!

Plus it's easier if you don't have to put in your password every time you connect.

How would I manage the cap? I could use Squid but I don't want Linux as my primary OS.

I was also thinking of Netmeter but we play LAN games and share files and that won't work.

Thanks in advance.

BTW: Bloem isn't so bad, we get nice contention ratios! :D

Just share the bill 1/3 each and if anybody is abusing just tell them to buy another GB. But ... that causes sheet with some kinds of peeps.

Buy 1GB pay as you go things and put the modem in bridge mode and let each person log in with their own ISP's login. Share the line rental.

Yeah, thats what I meant. Dial-up via PPPoE through a shared modem and ADSL line. Thanks stoke

And are you really going to use just 1 gig?!?! Really?!?!? :)
