Naff... you guys have it all wrong.

The schematic is thus :

Smoothwall --- Netgear (bridged mode) --- Internet

Basically the Netgear router acts as a modem, and Smoothwall will take the security functions over. This means that I can host servers on the Smoothwall side of things when opened the correct ports. This I have done on other installations. (This is the optimal setup).

Basically, if you set it up like this :

Smoothwall --- Netgear (router mode) --- Internet

then it is not possible to setup an FTP server or pass services/ports through from the Internet. (This is also known as a double NAT'ed setup).

Thanks for the feedback so far, but it isn't helping me at all... unless...

The netgear modems doesn't support PPPoE Bridged Mode... You can't do the PPPoE Connection on a device behind the router.

I'm more than likely replacing my netgear next month cuz of this exact issue.

this is the root cause of my issue.

I will invesitgate this further.

And, yes, the functionality in these routers sucks, the client wants to block pr0n sites, and be able to cache large downloads, such as antivirus updates and windowsupdates downloads. That's why a Smoothie/IPCop installation provides more functionality than the router itself.

Dude, I'm running a router (in router mode which connects to the ADSL, without DHCP, with a static IP) with ISA firewall (windows machine, domain controller, DHCP, static IP)

Client wants FTP, I tell the router "port forward port 21 to machine IP 192.168.0.2"

192.168.0.2 handles the request. I have several ports open for RDP/CRM/Exchange. All work in this manner.

Now, remove the windoze machine I'm using, and put your linux box in there. Same concept. Router port forwards whatever you tell it to to a specific static IP address internally (which would be your linux box) your linux box can then do with that request whatever it wants. Period.

The NetGear routers have hidden menu's where you can set it to act as modem or a router IIRC. Can't remember what the command is though. Will try and find it.
