New Telkom ADSL User Statistics/Calculations

Hi,

According to Telkom's user statistics FAQ, they only check your usage once a day at 12pm. I could always only check my usage the next day (after 12pm)...

What I do, and I know many others, is on the last day of the month e.g. 30th I download as much as I want to. If I went over my 3Gig limit, it would only register at 12pm that night, but wouldn't affect my cap, because the next day is the 1st and I get my new 3Gig for the next month.

Recently, it looks like they take it 2 times a day. I can see my usage for the same day during late mornings...Also, when I downloaded about 2 Gig on the last day of last month, it added almost 700mb to the 1st of the next month!!!

I suspect that they start to calculate the usage for the next day now, sometime from 5pm-8pm the current day.

Does anyone experience the same problem and maybe give me their new calculation times?

I think I'm seeing the same thing happening - my usage is definately updating faster than it used to !

For instance, I saw yesterdays total this morning, normally I only see a portion or none at all until the following day.

I hope it's just a fluke, otherwise it seems Teklom have decided to crack down on the end of the month "download as much as you can" trick.
 
telkom can only see after 12 if you dont disconnect they dont pick it up for awhile

last month with mweb my last month i downloaded nearly 9 gigs because i didnt disconnect

but my question does mweb or telkom pay the extra bandwidth?
 
That's the way they're suppose to work, and always did....except the last 2 months....

I never disconnect, my Router is always connected....as far as I know, they end your session round about 12pm. That's when your IP also change and why you cannot host on ADSL etc.....
 
You all got it wrong. The statistics page update the moment your PPPoE connection logs off. Now if your modem shares the internet, it is that the time the modem's PPPoE connection get reset (24 hours) or when you turn it off. At that moment the bandwidth you used should show up on the statistics page.

Now the decision as to when you get capped, is still decided at 00:00 hours.

But here is something interesting for all you guys. Lets say you connect at 00:10 the last day of the month, and you download 3gb or more, and your modem disconnects on 00:09 on the 1st of the next month, that 3gb is part of that month. In other words, you have wasted a whole month's cap!!

So here is how it works. The time when you log of, is the time/month to which the bandwidth you used belongs to.

So here is my advise, download up to 2.98gb and reset your modem at 23:50 on the 2nd last day of the month, then download as much as you can. But also. Then on the last day of the month, reset your router 23:50. To make sure the bandwith belongs to that month. Then in the new month, reset the router again at 00:10 to get back onto the uncapped ip range/router whatever.

Take this advice, leave it. Your choice.

Why would u use mweb last month? Afterall, you do have the wonderfull AYCE account? tehehehe
 
Ok, so I have to logoff/switch off manually............thought Telkom automatically ended your session at 00h00, will use advice then, thanks alot.

Actually telkom doesnt end your session at 12 at night, that is just when they change settings on who gets capped and who not. Your session ends when it has been connected for 24 hours, which start the moment the router dials up. Or when you force it to end by turning of the modem.
 
You say every 24 hours, ok.....so if I switch it on at 23h00 and leave it on for the month, sessions will automatically end at 23h00 the next day, which will keep me safe if I download e.g. 4 gig on last day of month and not switch the router off prior to 00h00 at last day?

Maybe so, but probably is safer to end session manually on last day, just in case...

Your 100% right - I found this out in my second month with ADSL - the fact that the usual 24 hour trick didn't make much sense.

My concern is that they seem to be updating usage more often ?
Usually, on reconnect in the morning (after disconnect the evening before), it wouldn't report any usage for the previous day and now it does.

Ah well, guess it's just Telkoms whacky way of doing things.

BTW, it's best to d/l as much as possible 2 days before the end of the month and avoid the inevitable network overload ! :)
 
How much money does it cost us for Telkom to unmanage the infrastructure?
