Oh and another thing, iburstuser if you were planning on being one of those people you should probably know they've capped newsgroups to something like 4kB

Not in my experience, admittedly with non-binary newsgroups. I have achieved as high as 120KB/sec on header retrieval by my personal news server, with body retrieval being somewhat slower.

From your eloquent wording, clearly not much. On the other hand, I keep track of a set of discussion groups, so that works quite nicely for me. I don't feel like adding binary newsgroups to my news server for test purposes only, so I tested a couple of binary groups set up on Mozilla after your message. Composite download speed of 14KB/sec.

Since beggars cant be choosers, let me rephrase: Free OR fast OR local OR international OR <whatever>.

Since p2p doesnt work, I want to maximise the time I have left till the cap (one week). Now torrents also give problems, so only news is left.

dude at least theres away round the torrent problem, newsgroups are capped to 64k and theres no way around it since they are port shaping that service.

Slim just had a look on my side. Full speed ie 120-130KB/S with newsrover. Port 119.

I dont know of any decent SOutH African Servers
It has a web frontend as well so when you download it is http and ftp.
I normally get over 120KBytes/sec off it.

Where do you get binaries from? I was giving a solution to that. If you want binaries, agreed, Google Groups is not the place for you.

well lets see, first off, alot of people just use newsgroups to get warez stuff and then iburstuser said and i quote

so yeah i think its pretty obvious he wants to download binaries from newsgroups... unless he was using p2p apps to download text files with newsgroup crap
