No such thing as an unemployed developer

I can understand your confidence in that you could find "something" but the thing is you're less likely to find something you actually want and it's like dating someone on the rebound. No company really wants you using them as a stopgap measure until you find something you really want.
 
There are many unemployed devs. I know of at least 1 completely useless specimen who recently became unemployed.

The Internet is full of them looking for work.
 
OP is right, no such thing as an unemployed developer unless you're an unemploy-able person

Yes, it is true that a good developer will not struggle to find work. The thing is it is always a good idea to have a contingency plan in place for even the unlikely risks. We all know how Murphy swings.
 
As a good developer you will never need a backup plan. You will have the skill and network of contacts to find an alternative position within a few days. If retrenchment comes as a surprise you have worked for the wrong company and they have not been transparent with their staff about company performance. If your a@@ has been kicked to the curb because you are not good and did a mediocre job - how could you miss this?
 
Interesting posts but I still believe my statement. Mxit is a prime example where they did one of the largest retrenchments in the industry yet at the same time they where looking for new developers with the right skillset.

I would say that all of the developers I socialise with all know more than one language as a developer who locks himself into a single language is not planning for the future (and I don't think to be a good one either if they are limited).

yeah.. one of the languages I used to code in was delphi.. but lately not doing anything with it, although I do get quite a few requests for delphi work I must say
