I used to connect to northcliff until they put up rosebank

Rosebank seems to go off for a few hours every feew days.
Sentech dialer says "network not available" even though I get 28% signal.

Anyway have been trying to get onto Northcliff again, but I cannot get any signal. Used to pick up only Northcliff from the one side of the house at about 20% signal, but now find nothing

Is it still up ??

Any idea what tower number that is ?
When I was in cresta carpark today, I hooked up to tower 66 ?

Yes its still up. I connect to it all the time. Tower 60.

I am on the edge of Rosebank and when Northcliif goes down, I pick up Rosebank. My antenna is directed towards Northcliff using a dish 29% signal strength.

I connect from 4 Ways shopping centre to tower 66. Last week I drove with my laptop right to the Northcliff water tower and there I connected to tower 119 if I recall correctly. Is this right? What tower is this?

My house is in the Cradle of Humankind area, and there I also see a signal from tower 66, about 10%. Of course it won't connect because I'm about 20km away from 4 ways. If Sentech would put tower 66 on the 29 km option, I would be able to connect from home. Oh well.

Sentech is slowly de-commisioning there less used towers, apparently they're going to concentrate on only densly used areas (where most members connect)

What happened to their plans for cornering 20% of the ZA home market? [}:)]

I hope iBurst is watching these developments [:o)]

Well, if the number/tower data I have is correct- I can give the following input:
bb_matt- from Cresta parking you logged into Aasvoelkop;
Clivedoubell- Fourways Exchange (aka the wet noodle *grumble*) ALSO has a 66 identifier; I'm utterly amazed you can see a signal that far out from that dratted thing- are you high up at your house? Also, I have no record of a #119, but I'm not going to say that's definitive- I've learnt to be paranoid and untrusting when fed uncorroborated data *g*
Wireless2- you don't give system details, but I'm going to suggest that you use the ProAsm dialer (and, of course on Windoze) as it actually gives you the error code for when things don't work. IIRC #678 is a logon failure, for all that you may have signal. Of course if you're already doing this please ignore my waffle! *g*

I might have been wrong about the 119 number, I do suffer from significant brainfade.

Yes I am quite high up. I have LOS to the Dome, Santon, Northcliff water tower and a few other places. But not 4ways. Still I get a signal from there. I was thinking to put a 803.11 something Wifi link between my house and somewhere, but alas the international speeds from MiWi is so pathetic that it isn't really worth it.

I go to that general area reasonably often so I know from LOS to the Dome and seeing as Northcliff IS a ridge I can see why that'd be visible too. I figure it must be the Aasvoelkop #66 you can see; I've already had a couple of craptacular results from Fourways Exchange and I've seen pretty decent over-the-hill-and-outta-sight performance from Aasvoelkop on a signal test in Weltevreden Park.

I was thinking of slapping an antenna on top of the Northcliff water tower - there are quite a few there allready - and make a wifi link to my home, about 30km LOS. I have to approach Johannesburg Water to find out how to do that. I'm not sure it's quite feasible though.

I can tell you that tower 22 has a frickin huge footprint and I've no idea whether that's the Mintek or the Randburg tower.

I can get Hyde park (12) if I hold my modem up near the ceiling and move it 2 metres back [:)]

But both towers give out **** bandwidth in equal measures [:D]

I'm penning my cancellation fax right now, but I'm going to get the old laptop out for a laugh this coming weekend and do some stats just for my own peace of mind just for interests sake.

I had a long chat to a bloke at sentech support just now in connection with cancelling and he indicated that it may just be the tower, to which of course I replied that it's not.

What it is, in reality, is Sentech not having enough Int. bandwidth - plain and simple.

ah well.

bb_matt- I show one #22 tower and that's Randburg Metro. Mintek is #82. I have to dispute your assertion of **** bandwidth, that's hardly been my experience at all! But then- from my bedroom window I can eyeball the Hyde Park tower antenna with an 8x32 binocular and I can see the Randburg one with the nekkid eye; I'm kinda spoiled for choice here but I reckon I can cope with it! *g*
