ntop and linux

Ok i'm a total n00b with linux

got hold of a Fedora Core 4 (4disc set)...

i want to help out a friend with an internet cafe (14 pcs) . he has 3 x 3gb adsl accounts and they get blown in no time .

suggestions were made to run linux and ipcop/ntop for proxy and let all the pcs go thru the proxy ..

couple of q's:

*what installation role should i install fedora into -workstation/server?
*any links/guides for ntop/ipcop step-by-step wise?

UInforunately you've come to the wrong place.Ive already asked about the NTOP installation - nobody could help.As 4 asking anything remotely advance you on the wrong forum.This is a good place for general broadband and IT help , not advance stuff.

i could always try win2k3 server with ISA 2006

While ISA2006 is good dont waste your Money.Rather do the following setup

PC - > sWITCH -> IPCOP -> ADSL/iburst Modem

Use the IPCOP as the Proxy Server + Router - > This should be the cheapset option.

Running IPCop with its built-in Squid Proxy enabled is a good option for this scenario, just download the IPCop i386 iso image burn it to a CD and boot that CD from the box that you want to use as a dedicated IPCop box - make sure that the box has 2 network cards, then as ubercal mentioned - use one or more ethernet network switches to connect up the Inet Cafe's PC to the IPCop box.

There are a few tricks to the actual IPCop installation, there are many forumites that use IPCop [myself included], let us know if you run into any problems or need specific IPCop help or advice.

Not too sure what you would gain with Web Proxy. Strikes me that a Internet Cafe is not a scenario where you would get many cache hits - different users with different interests - any thoughts anyone?. Inceasing the cache size on IPCop from 50 Mb by a reasonable magnitude say 500Mb also slows things down somehat (that old celeron starts to battle).

IPCop IS s a good idea for general security however.

like mentioned download the latest IPcop distro much less then 4 CDs

then google for ntop on IPcop. - Used to use Ntop on Ipcop and was great
just didnt sure the data but for this environment it is perfect.

otherwise look at mikrotik (http://www.mikrotik.com) - you do have to pay for it but worth it. it is not that pricey

I think a proxy could be helpful even at an Inet cafe.
