So. If you get millions of people poratablilling their numbers rite? And each network has special rates for Their network to Their network calls (Vodacom2Vodacom)... How do you even know who is on vodacom and who is on MTN and who is on CellC?

Stupid Phone companies

I just pay attention to the ring pattern and hope they dont pick up too quickly.

It's been widely published that a special tone will play when a call goes off the network. And only 50 000 people poratablilled (sic), not millions.

Clever...

I'd rather have MNP with all its foibles than being forced to stay on one network to keep my number.

Same here.
It only beeps AFAIK if you are calling from your own network to a number "apparently" on the same network but that has been ported to a different network.

It doesn't beep when calling from a landline either.

I called from an international mobile (Nigeria) 2 weeks ago to a CellC number ported to Vodacom. You hear three high-pitch short beeps indicating you are phoning a ported number, then about 2 seconds and then the phone starts ringing.

I don't know if international counts the same as landline?
