(Off topic) Going rates

Hi guys...

I was wondering, what is the going rate, per hour, to hire someone to install a network for you? Ie, to share computers internet connection and so forth?

Thanks...

it's not that difficult johnny, no need to pay for something that's easy enough to do yourself.

all of us are here to help you as well.

go for it, it's not that bad...

what hardware do you have?

There is quite a good "HowTo" for setting up a small IP network at home at www.ipcop.org - have a look in the docs - http://www.ipcop.org/1.3.0/en/install/html/home-nets.html

Don't pay someone to do it, do it yourself. If you need help post here or www.drboot.co.za . I set up my network that way with no knowledge at all on how to do it, and a bit of help from Werner on DrBoot!

If you really want to part with R300 you can send it to me ;)

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your replies. I will certainly call on you all if I need help!

;-)

Well, if your networking an office, unless you know what your doing, pay someone to do it for you :) - unless of course you want wires running across the floor ...

Home networking is dead easy - just make sure you don't get ripped off - don't shop at incrappable corruption. :)

If your in JHB, I recommend Cable Link in strijdom park to get your cables and switch - very cheap.

Yes, i think there are enough people here who could help you with your networking issues.
The alternative is a bit of a hit-and-miss affair. I've been doing software installation and support since i got back to south africa middle of last year. Many of the network solutions i've seen in my clients' workplaces have been attrocious, and often people have been charged way over acceptable rates for their products, which are often based on older operating systems, with iffy hardware, underpowered pcs', etc. And very often, original OS disks are not left with the customer (which i think is illegal, someone can correct me if i'm wrong). Also, i've seen quite a few examples of technicians setting themselves up as the Admin, and not leaving passwords for the client, so they have to call the techie in each time for basic stuff like firewall permissions etc. for which they are, of course, charged.
Having said that, i've also seen many examples of good functioning network solutions, some of the best and most user-friendly i've seen, installed by technicians who really know their stuff, charge reasonable prices, and provide excellent support.
So if you're going to get someone in, make sure its on a good recommendation.
