Open Office!

A couple of months ago, my colleague and I were swapping a document at work, a .docx Word file. It was quite simple, just a logo, a border and bulleted text. OpenOffice under Ubuntu totally messed up the formatting, so when I got it back from him, I copied and pasted his changes onto my original copy. I was not impressed. OpenOffice is a very good package, but it really needs a lot more polishing and refining if it wants to really challenge MS Office.

That's not at all fair MS intentionally created the docx format to be incompatible with other programs and have not made the specs of the format available to anyone. Docx format exists purely because MS are afraid of openoffice (and Google Docs).

You can't blame OO for that, blame obscure standards.

I reckon the same thing will happen if you try and open that document in Word Perfect. At least Open Office attempts to open the opposition's documents. Try giving your colleague a .odt and see what MS Word makes of that.

I have been using open office for a while now and since version 3 it has been my primary suite
