Choose Wisely
We have been trying the Openweb VPN ADSL now for the past few months for one of our offices.
The good:
Cheap bandwidth. I mean really cheap.
P2P, games, ftp ens.
The bad:
VPN connection seems to lock you out sometimes. Effectively cutting off your international traffic until it resets.
Testing the effective bandwidth you will find the normal effect when running through a vpn. In my tests without the vpn i got ~300kbps and with ~100kbps.
VPN disconnects sometimes without any apparent reason. Especially over weekends. I had mine set to immediately reconnect, so most of the time I didnt even notice it anymore.
You might have 4 local ADSL concurrent sessions, however, for international traffic you need the VPN connection, and you only get one of those, unless you buy some more.
We experienced some extremely slow internet(browsing) at times. To the extend of switching to our backup ISP account to keep the ppl working.
I do play the odd WOW now and again, and the latency was barely acceptable. I wouldn't recommend Exteel or any other FPS tho.
Note:
Your router has to be very specific. I'd recommend you post your router details and get Mr Beep to confirm that it'll work. I ended up sharing the internet from our server by sharing the VPN connection.
The conclusion:
IMO, Its a great solution for the home user. Not stable enough to rely on for office use(maybe for large low risk/none time constrained downloads) and the bandwidth overhead of the vpn might make it unacceptable for your own vpn. BUT, its realy cheap internet for those power users who wont mind the overhead of switching to your backup account now and again. Its a superb solution for P2P. I don't think I've seen anything comparable to it yet when it comes to P2P.
