Packet Loss

I try and use mywireless for trading. It actually works well, most of the time, however, sometimes when I try an initiate a trade (i.e. send them data), I get told by the package that I am using, that there is a connection error, however, even tho I am still receiving data.

After discussing the problem with the guys who I trade with, we agreed that it could be due to packet loss.

Now what I want to know from all the boffins, is:

1. If I improve the signal strength, (i.e. bigger and better antenna)will it reduce the packet loss.
2. I had problems with the charting site that I was using, and the only way I could resolve this was by changing the MTU to 1430. Do you think by reducing the MTU it will reduce the packet loss.
3. Or do I just "give up"
4. Any other solutions?

My signal strength is about 12% (3 lights)and using a cantenna (purchased from the USA)

If you are running the 4.2.1.8 firmware you'll probably not see any beter packet loss results with any of the options you mentioned.

In general, if the signal strength is over 12% I've found that bigger antennas etc don't do too much.

If you are connecting to Minktek(12) specifically there looks to be a problem with the gear. Hopefully they will fix it soon.

If you can I'd suggest you try running to Aasvoelkop(116) - tower seems happier in general.

As an aside, if the trade system is using TCP connections (which one would expect) then packet loss should not cause this error unless the timeouts for connecting is set low... If it is possible see if you can increase the timeout for sending data to them (this would have to be a software setting in their system)... If they ask WHY you'd like to increase this timeout explain that the round trip time via Mywireless can be in excess of 4500ms sometimes...

Sounds like poor software design. Was probably designed for high speed, low latency connections like Cable and DSL.

Not necessarily poor design. When there are thousands of shares being traded every second low system latency is crucial to keep share information consistent. In this situation a 5 second delay might just not be feasible.
