Dear MyADSL-Community

I've compiled a short ebook, Parents Guide to MXit, and would like to get your feedback. I've left out detailed descriptions of Tradepost for now. And focussed on installing, registering and chat rooms. I've included some info on Internet addiction and provided some resources on Online Safety. This is something I'm passionate about, creating a safe environment for children/teenagers online. Being a long-time Internet users I sometimes take things for granted because they are so clear to me. And other long time cellphone/Internet users will agree. We are always already adaptors. Well anyway this guide is a the start, and I'm working on a more detailed update with a ton of questions I received after a radio interview in September on Cape Talk/702.

Any feedback you can email me by Tuesday lunchtime would be much appreciated. Specifically let me know if I'm missing anything for now.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to your feedback.

Sincerely
Ramon
p.s. You can download the draft here: http://www.netucation.co.za/downloads/Parents-Guide-to-MXIT.pdf.

PS, i dont think the PDF link is working?? any one else open it?
Yes.

BTW - the guy is asking for comments on the guide so maybe you should read it first?

Comments:

  1. You could do with a proof reader - someone with a clean pair of eyes who can distance themselves from your labour of love. :)
  2. The installing Mxit section is a little too detailed considering the intend purpose of the guide.
  3. Page 10 - graphic needs cropping
Otherwise - good start.

Thanks for the direction into the light there bwana v.20... i was losing my way... i see the light.. walk into the light.. "Connection Lost" .. Hey!! where did my light go?

I have a proof reader ready to go in the next two days. What I want from you guys is some specific feedback on the instructions to download, install and register. The chat rooms and anything that a parent should know on how to move around in the MXit environment.

My proof reader will re-write it in more plain and simple english, fix grammar, etc.

Thanks guys!
Ramon

I think mxit is a great way to save money, despite its bad points
All over the world its like this,we cannot stop it,Its part of life
Why when somethin great comes along people start bitchin
Its as if the telly tubbys are satanic( i think there was a article about that)
Same day different ****

I believe that parent cannot stop this if there child is usin mxit the wrong way
Today kids are very clever(some hackers are even 11 years old)
my suggestion is that mxit should have moderators or at least computer programs that scan for **** in all chat rooms

Like many things in todays society, such as drugs, sex and alcohol, MXIT is something which needs very good self control even when used by an adult.

In the hands of an inexperienced youngster it can be very dangerous as it is very addictive.

This being said, I do not see the point of your very detailed installation ins ructions. These need to be removed and far more emphasis placed on how a non tech can identify that the problem exists and once identified, how to handle it. The only technical instructions required are those showing how to check whether mxit is installed.

I originally thought mxit would be a cheap way of communicating with my son. I soon discovered that he'd become totally addicted. Fortunately I was able to convince him of his problem and he voluntarily removed it. Many of his school rands have also realized their problem and removed it.

In its current form the article is nothing more than a detailed guide on how to install mxit, but it does have potential if it can be go to the right people.

I think you miss the point. I would guess that you don't have kids. So don't try telling parents how to bring up their children - that attitude will fall on deaf ears.
I agree with your point that it should have moderators. In fact, I think they should charge a small registration fee with some sort of ID / credit check involved. Scabs seem to avoid areas where they are known to someone - even if it is just the mods... and of course another real issue is addiction - to say that as a parent you won't be able to do anything about it - well, that is spoken as someone who has never had the opportunity and responsibility of bringing up a child. I could just sit back and say - well, my child will become a druggie, thief, murderer and rapist if he wants - theres not much I can do... or I can be proactive and point him in the right direction and then discipline him if he goes astray. Believe me - discipline without love is meaningless, but if there is that bond of love in the first place - nurtured over time by taking a real interest and spending real time with your kids, then discipline is inevitable and WILL be respected by them. It's only those who leave their kids to their own devices from the start that can't do anything later on in life when it is really required...

i do have a child but his only16 months old,and i cannot disspline him cause his mommy is always on my case,
I agree with you, bring a child up with love,,,,etc. He will choose the right path
But friend are the most important factor of a childs upbring,That what i think
LIKe i said i dont know,I still have to get there. When my son grows up there wil probably be worst things than mxit(here i come australia)

Wow

tension seems high in this thread, I believe if we raise our children properly then there are no threats in this world.

Or we could take away their cell phones
Internet
Television
Playstations

and lock them in a room all day, and they would never get into trouble.

By the way I like the "Guide to Mixit"

And the kids are off, taking the "*Parent's* guide to MXit" and redistributing it under the title "*g3t w/ da program already dude* guide to MXit". Especially useful to give to all your buddies who only NOW just got the phone that can handle MXit....

And all this even before the original "Parents Guide to MXit" has even gone through final proof-reading....

Just an observation.
