Hi

I am currently living in the UK but I will be in South Africa for 3 months from the end of Feb. I play World Of Warcraft over here and would like to carry on playing it while I am in South Africa.

Had a look on this forum and it looks like I need to do the following:
1) Contact Telkom to get them to install an ISDN Line
- I currently use an 8Meg Broadband over here but I think this is ADSL
- I take it ADSL is not avail in SA?
- Whiich ISDN line should I go for if I maily will use it for WOW?

2) Contact a Service Provider to get a Unshaped ISDN Service
- I have an Mweb account so my mom can use normal 56k internet.
- Will they be able to provide this?
- Otherwise the 1GB from Web Africa sounds like a good option

3) Make use of a VPN like Nukecap

Is this the best setup to play WOW in SA? Also will I be able to set this up for just 3 months or you have to sign 12 month contracts? If I go ahead with all of this how much should I budget on spending for the 3 months?

Thanks!

Hi Dugant

ADSL is most certainly available in South Africa, no need for ISDN and no need for a VPN. Just phone Telkom to confirm that ADSL is available in your area.

I play on the Dentarg realm (EU) with a standard 512 kb/s
shaped ADSL line with zero lag.

Mweb is expensive rather go with SAOL, Imaginet or WebAfrica

DON'T SIGN ANY CONTRACTS. You can get ADSL on a month to month basis.

Cool thanks for the Info Nebula! Well if ADSL is available then that is probably the best bet. Will try Webafrica and see what their prices are like

Cheers

The lattency on SAOL is usualy between 600-1200 you do get the occasional lag spike but over all the connection is pretty smooth. This is too the EU WOW.

I have not been in SA for a few years now, and have got used to being able to order a Telco service and expect it to be set up in 1-2 days.

Has Telkom progressed to that state, or will you get to SA, order your new adsl service, wait 2 months for it, be able to play a month, ad then fly back?

Maby someone can give u an idea of the service now.

You will be waiting at least 3 weeks for them to install it (ADSL) but some people have waited as long as 4-5 months.

Hehehe, and it costs a cr@p load here... R500 odd for just the line and then u have to add the ISP cost on top of that, plus u have to pay for line rental of R90 odd.

Telkom's expected turn around time is 6 weeks. It's usually around 3 weeks to a month.

For online gaming you need at least 384k ADSL which will set you back as follows:

Line Rental: R90.00 per month
ADSL Line Rental: R359 per month
ISP Fee: R200.00 per month (3GB Cap)

For better performance one can upgrade the ADSL line rental to:

512k R477 per month
1024k R680 per month

You can also upgrade to unshapped on the ISP side for around R399.00 for a 3GB Cap.

I use a shaped account and Nukecap VPN, plays fine. Not sure if its necessary to go unshaped.

192 kbps is just fine for gaming as a matter of fact.

I play BF2 local on SGS with a response time of about 30 - 50ms and WoW on EU servers with latency ranging between 400 - 700. All this over an Imaginet freestyle+ 2000 account. Unshaped, 2GB cap (well its actually uncapped, but you pay R13-something for every 100MB you go over 2GB)

Works fine for me.

I am playing WoW again on 56K, works fine, I am on Ursin.
