POP3 sharing with ADSL and Windows 98?

Hi guys


Perhaps this question has been raised that I just missed it in the forum.

What I have is a Windows 98 SE machine with a USB modem & ADSL.

We also have 3 other PC's that need to use this connection. I might figure this out... but how can one have the others use POP3 via Outlook Express... in others words, how to I share POP3? Its not that nice for them to use it webbased...

Please help if possible.

1) Go in to the properties window of the shared internet connection(knowing this from XP,not sure if the same on Win98SE)
2) Go to the "Advanced" tab.
3) At the very bottom, there is a "Settings..." button. Click it.
4) This lets you select services on the network that the users can access.. By default, POP3 and SMTP servers are de-selected. Check the boxes beside both of these.
5) We're not done yet though. Also, by default, it assumes that the SMTP and POP3 servers are on the machine sharing the internet connection. So, click the "Edit" button on both these services and enter the SMTP and POP3 information supplied by your ISP into the field that asks for "the Name or IP of the computer hosting this service on your network. (eg: mail.myisp.com)
6) Hit "Ok" until all the dialogs are gone. Disconnect your internet connection. Reconnect your internet connection. Voila!

Hi Xerox,
Do u mind telling me what you get when you setup your normal mail account on the client machine and adding the normal pop3 and smtp servers of your iSP.Also make sure that your connection for the mail is poiting to your LAN(ICS)to draw mail.

I have the solution. - thanks for your input also!

If anyone else is having this problem (sharing POP3 over ADSL) use this:

Download the AnalogX proxy server from http://www.analogx.com and set your IP addresses in the same range that they provide in the ReadMe's file. (we used the 10.x.x.x range they give of the three)

The enable all the protocols in the config of the proxy, including POP3. If the icon in the task bar of the proxy is a red colour, it means (usually) your POP3 is not correctly setup.

Set the binding in the config of the proxy to the "server"'s IP. In other words, if the machine with the ADSL modem's IP is 10.1.1.2, then the binding address would also be that. By default it is set to "disabled" in the proxy.

Click OK and the proxy task bar icon should now be a lovely shaded green.

Then, on the client machines, set in Outlook the following:

Set the email account's POP3 & SMTP servers both to the main "server" machine's IP address, ie: 10.1.1.2. (same as binding)

It should connect through the ADSL connected machine and work 100%.
