So here I am nothing to do tonight
so i decided to pull out the old port scanner and see what our wonderfull
adsl world in SA has.
It is intresting to see how many people in SA on adsl
dont change their passwords for their router and to see
that so many people out there who have adsl modems have shared drive
which I may say is not that bad to map to over my poor little 384 line
download alot of mp3's

I would think that Telkom would put a add out there telling people
a bit on how to protect them self's

what do you think ???

When you get ADSL they should make you fill in a form with preferred security settings and such

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but how do you do that? It sound interessting!

Sarcasm

but thats how you do it download a port scanner and run it
wait how about this
download a piece of software designed to search a network host for open ports and run it :D

What program is the best to use (I downloaded Angry IP Scanner), and what IP range do I put in?

Have a look into Wardriving, amazing what you can pick up with a laptop, wifi card and a little net stumbling!

Anyone who is asking here how to find these IP's and IP ranges, I highly doubt they are going to be just "looking".

I think it's a good thing to make people aware of it.

Once they realise just how vunerable they are they will be more careful in future. Ignorance is not bliss. It's dangerous :D

Is port scanning illegal?
Try nmap geezer (http://insecure.org/nmap/)

Cheers, Nick

Definition Of A Port Scan:
A port scan is a method used by hackers to determine what ports are open or in use on a system or network. By using various tools a hacker can send data to TCP or UDP ports one at a time. Based on the response received the port scan utility can determine if that port is in use. Using this information the hacker can then focus their attack on the ports that are open and try to exploit any weaknesses to gain access.

There are two aproaches to Port scannining:

1) White hat Hacker (The good guy) i.e. if your'e scanning for security reasons, scanning your own ports for threat issues ect...

2) Black hat Hacker (The bad guy) i.e. scanning other computers with the intention of doing harm i.e. putting in small files to steal information from other computers, i.e.Personal data,ect...

You may of course scan your own ports or looking for vulnerable ports on your own Computer/network for security threats.

As an avid watcher of my firewall logs, I am always amazed at how many times a day I get port scanned, particularly form the SA ADSL range. Whats even worse, is that as a courtesy ill scan back, only to find numerous ports open, some even answering back favourably. Thankfully Im not the malicous kind.
