Portable Aircons - Worth it?

It might be a faulty unit then, might be worthwhile to contact the place where you bought it and find out if it can be swopped out, or they must check and fix it under warranty. Or at the very least they can tell if you are perhaps doing something wrong.

I've found on my unit that the water storage only fills up when I run the dehumidifier. When the tank is full a red light (I think?) will activate and the unit will not circulate air. So if the unit is still circulating air then a full water tank is probably not the cause of the problem.
Sidenote: If there is a lot of moisture in the air then the tank fills up quite quickly. Open the outlet valve with the unit in the shower or outside otherwise you'll end up with water on the floor... or even worse, carpets.

Which is why I made certain to buy units that would extricate the moisture in the vented pipe air

When you transported it,did you place it on it's side?

Nope, not even when setting it up cos I read that you then have to leave it standing for 24hours but they swapped it out and its working beautifully

Weird, my first portable aircon and I thought is this it? Just a strong fan

They brought another new unit and we connected it and it even sounded totally different, louder and could hear the Compressor come on. The old one was so quiet even on HIGH that I was wondering why people complain that its quite noisy

Within 2mins or so it was blowing COLD air as an Aircon should.

Cold when standing in front of it and it took an hour to get a 6 x 7 room cooled down nicely even with high ceilings.

This is by having it on 21 degrees with the vent at the window and Without the sealing kit

On this unit there IS actually hot airflow out of that duct where on the previous one there was no pressure really.
That defective units Aircon / Compressor wasnt working and was just a Fan.

Glad it got replaced TODAY with this Heatwave

No, they're not.

Wall-mounted split type A/Cs are well priced these days if you shop a bit. Even inverter-based ones.

Also, annual/6-mothly servicing of A/C is a scam to guarantee income for the installer. Take 20min every 6 months, clean the filters and vacuum the inside-radiator fins with a horse-brush, hose the outside unit down and brush the radiator fins if required.
Get a R410-gas top-up whenever the thing stops cooling/heating.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: No.

Even longer answer: Too noisy, inefficient, need to properly setup hot air exit or else you are reheating the same room you are trying to cool, but again not entirely avoidable because at least some part of the exhaust tubing is still in the room radiating the exhaust heat, sort out water drain and finally still deal with it taking up floor space in your room.

I've never owned an aircon before, so not 100% sure if these things need servicing etc.

I probably wont get a TCL. We use Samsung Aircons. Service every 2-3 years. If its installed correctly you dont need regular servicing. Had our one for 15 years now, the other for 9 but it blew up due to an Eskom spike. Was plugged into a wall plug and not into the main circuitboard like the other one. So replacing the other one and now rewiring it.

If you own the place and can get it installed look at builders etc.

My first suggestion to install it is in the main bedroom, and then into the lounge 2nd. But depending how big your place is, and if you insulated your ceilings it should cool down the entire house. Just use block out blinds or so. And insulate with those 145mm isotherm rolls. Leave gaps for the lights. That makes the biggest difference with your home's temp.

Inverters are only beneficial if you are running it pretty much all the time, otherwise the non inverter will do. You just need good ceiling insulation and check your doors and windows. That way when it cools quick via the aircon, it keeps the ambient temperature and you can turn the aircon off. Otherwise all that cool air escapes quickly.

Don't listen to this bullshit people spew out, I have one i had it for almost 9 years now. It works. Make a board that has a hole in it to put onto your window so that the hot air can get pushed out and keep the door closed so the room can cool down. Mine makes strange sounds but it is 9 years old I do expect it to kick the bucket eventually. but they work. Mine is a heavy on power it draws about 2Kw/h to cool a 4m by 4m office takes about 30min but mine is beefy boy so yours may be faster or slower.
