Power over Ethernet solution for WRT54G

I've been playing with my new Linksys WRT54G with the ultimate aim of creating a community network node.

Linksys has a power over internet solution WAPPOE see

I was wondering if anyone has tried any alternative POE solutions on this hardware.

Contact details of a local distributor for the above mentioned would also be helpful.

why not make your own POE? i made one for my router and it works perfectly. but try and keep the network cable as short as possible because of the power loss over the distance of the cable. i setup mine up and created a mrtg graph of the traffic going in and out of it. it stated that it has only been up for 3 secs before it died. cut the cable shorter and now it works. it was running on a 5vdc psu. 12vdc i am sure will manage to run on a longer cable.
 
I'm willing to give it a try.

The router has survived several non official firmware tweaks, but with this I'm a bit more cautious.

Which wires are not used by the ethernet link and how does one split them out again at the router? Any links or diagrams you can point me to?

Any help would be much appreciated.
 
there are two methods. The one involves a switch that has poe built-in. It handles all the power levels and stuff. These can handle 10/100/1000 links

In the other method a device get slotted in on the line on either end of the link to insert and remove the power. These can handle only 10/100 links.

in the second mode you use pins 4, 5, 7 and 8 for power
