Pretoria to keep name, for now.

I hope they don't change the name.

Referendum

The only way I will accept that the name be changed is if they hold a referendum in Pretoria and more than two thirds of the people vote to change it as at the end of the day it will cost those same people dearly when all the bills start rolling in.
This should be the case across the whole country.
It is expensive to change names when the focus should be on service delivery and the urgent needs of the poorer communities.

Note:
In the case of Pretoria there is clear and concise history available that Pretorius who the city was named after had nothing to do with the Apartheid Legacy.
He actually died about 100 years before those laws were written.

Sadly, I think it's less about removing the Legacy of Apartheid, and more about trying to display a new black prominence.

I mean, what's the point of changing Warmbad to Bella Bella, otherwise? Warmbad is entirely politically neutral.

Aye. It's a pity to see government more interested in posturing rather than actually doing something of real worth.

What is rather significant is that Pallo Jordan made the announcement since it is not really his dept who decides but rather Sydney Mufumadi's Provincial and Local Govt dept.

He speaks Afrikaans fluently so I reckon he must have had some influence in the ANC and calmed the hotheads on the council and that Mbeki probably finally stepped in and killed it.

This is probably the last we will hear from it ever ... there will be further "consultation" :).

Well,

I didn't expect to see this kind of news headline!!

Do you ppl realise how much money Mr Pallo Jordan saved our country with this effort? !High Five!

:)

Er, actually I don't. :p How much would such a change cost?

It will be interesting to see if SABC News will keep referring to Pretoria as Tshwane.

I think a lot of the renaming in Limpopo can be put down to a marketing exercise.

If you are renaming the province from the Northern Province to Limpopo, and you want to market it as Africa's Eden, and your target market is European tourists then doesn't it make more sense to ensure that all the towns in your province have exotic names, not names that could be the town next door in Holland or Germany.

To a overseas tourist Bela bela is much more appealing than Warmbaths.

i am sure that there was a political undertone but the marketing angle actually makes sense.

There is a difference actually.

The bigger Metropolitan area is called Tshwane.
Pretoria is part of Tshwane and also the Capital of South Africa.

Notice that most municipalities have black names that differ from the city or town. They are intent on renaming everything by stealth or brute force. White heritage will be wiped out eventually - no matter whether it had anything to do with oppression or not. Extreme dominance is just the way of our new masters!

WatchDog : Whilst I think renaming Pretoria is wrong, your statement is absurd. Almost every place/street/etc reflects our European heritage. Bringing a bit of balance is not wrong. As long as the places whose names are changed are carefully thought about. Menu Costs must be taken into account

The way Pretoria is going you can just as well name it Marabastad extension 2.The town is filthy, Sunnyside and Hatfield are crime infested with prostitution and drugs every where. Pretoria is fast becoming a real “African town.”

I will keep on caling our city pta NOT tswane as you can see at my above location tab... they aren't anyway's creative with names have you ever heard B peoples names like "sms Samsung august" i mean wtf! if they can't name properly well end up having our capital citys with names like square or horse or wtf ever

this other day while i was driving on the road i saw a blak driving a jaguar xkr and his number plate was square 1 i mean really I think you get my point?
