Hello All

Most iBurst users would have noticed (more pronounced) problems over the 1 1/2 days (irc/msn/imap/ssh) from inside the iBurst network to the outside.

Quite a few ppl have asked me if I know what is wrong ... not sure BUT:

While there has been no official word from iBurst it seems that there was a major DDOS attack onto the network and they had to take measures to constrain the problem.

While I'm sure many of us were unhappy they did at least keep the service running.

I trust we'll get official word soon....

*** As always, these are my opinions, I am in NO way associated with iBurst ***

How did you come to this conclusion?

yeah I have my doubts about a ddos attack mainly because the only kids bored and with that kind of ddos power are overseas and couldnt be bother with some small SA ISP and the people who pull of major DDOS attacks on ISPs or major pipelines do so for some sort of monetary goal (black mail, working for a competitor etc) in both cases it seems entirley unlikley WBS would be a worthwhile target.

From what I was seeing it felt liek they were playing with the bandwith manager again, like how downloads started fast (crazy fast sometimes) and slowed down to the normal 120KB/s and how all the services that were bad were the non priority services or how people said they had and i quote "fastest speed ever on HTTP last night"

If it was a DDOS attack it would slow everythign down and not just non priority services, well thats what i think anyways

Well, the last few days, I have noticed a *lot* of iBurst IP range stuff in my logs - waaay more than usual, perhaps that is considered a DDOS attack by WBS...?

[Not that I consider it a DDOS attack - not enough, but more than usual, and it is unlikely to be aimed just at me]

no a DDOS attack is when lots of computers flood a single host by sending misc data through UDP (connectionless) in order to knock the computer off the net (or knock down a single service at least)

you probably have TCP requests in your log and a DDOS attack would be aimed at a certain computer not a whole bunch, for instance if you wanted to take down WBS you would ddos a server node higher up therefor taking out the whole network, do a tracert, if you wanna take out wbs you aim at one of those IPs, not just misc random users on the network.

speaking of DDOS if someone wanted to take out WBS they could kill it by using a DRDOS attack, they just send fake ack syn packets that look liek they're from wbs.co.za to soem main internet router(s) constantly for liek 2 hours with a normal 10mbit server, the data sent back will be 3 times the original size and sent to wbs from the fastest pipelines on the net, so you send 10MB quickly in requests to that router and it sends 30MB of data to wbs even faster there are even techniques to make the reply packets 10 times the original size. That would be cool... as long as it didn't take out my connecton

I aggree but although I have had the fastest speeds on http ever my msn mess and skype are working fine. I can't say much for torrents tho.

yeah but thats because of shaping, we all know that
get torrentflux and start enjoying your connection

I installed my new router today and BitTorrent files now work better than ever before! All the crap I've had has also stopped! No more disconnections, no more slowing down

are you sure the changes are due to the router or is it just the topsy turny nature of wireless broadband?

I downloaded 1/2 Gb on Thursday night (HTTP) . Connection was flying faster than I have ever seen, even on single threads. Maybe it is because they'd switched their bandwidth manager off, in order to tweak it. I say this because that 1/2 Gb has not registered at all on my bandwidth usage.
