Hi there

What would the process of creating an online shopping website entail?

The user would need to view various product, and then have the option to add products to basket, and checkout, payment will then be made through paypal.

If a WYSIWYG program has a build in "shopping cart" feature, would this be an easy task?

How does secure SSL work?

Thank you

Many of the open source virtual store packages implement PayPal functionality. You'd have to have an FNB account in good old ZA to receive funds, though...

The "WYSIWYG" part of an online store is just defining product and listing templates. If the application has been built it should work.

SSL doesn't have anything to do with the website, per se, but is about the transferring of data between the client and server computers. This entails having a secure channel for transferring information, being verified by a certificate being issued and verified by the appropriate authorities. So, in simple terms, you need to apply and pay for a certificate and load it on your hosting server.

Thank you
Pleasure.

Hi there

thank you kindly for the reply. Is this something that a beginner in web design could achieve, or is it more complex? The client has already arranged SSL from the hosting company.

They also require a 'forum" for the website which enables users to post pics, comments, etc

What is the normal going rate for developing such a site?

Would the client be able to maintain such products, etc with CPanel provided by the hosting company?

Thank you

I would charge per hour not for a 'full site', unless a proper specification has been drawn up. The user should be able to maintain their products via the back-end of the shopping cart system.

Forums are easy to set up. I wouldn't leave the design/implementation of the credit card bit to a beginner though. You are placing yourself in a position where you are responsible for the safety of other people's money - I would take that very seriously.

I am going to sound rude but I would say honestly just forget about a shopping cart and forum. You asked a question the other day asking if you can edit free themes with a WYSIWYG editor...

Asking stuff like that just makes it clear you don't know what you talking bout. Again I am not bashing on you if you want to learn but then start with baby steps. Make a 1 page site from scratch then move onward. This whole thing of getting clients when you don't even know wtf you doing is bull****.

I personally enjoy web design and development and have a passion for it. Perhaps thats why I feel so strongly about it. Random people looking to make quick bucks and low quality sites just annoy me.

Also charging people for low quality sites is like ripping them off... http://pixelbright.co.za/blog/building-your-online-brand/

FYI, if you're going to use PayPal as the payment gateway you don't require an SSL certificate to encrypt information. Everything happens on PayPal's site.
