PSU help

if you run your monitor off another source of power, it should be fine

your pc wont boot up if its under powered

Run this calculator

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

Judging by the calculator and considering you've got a DVD Writer and an IDE drive you'd fall 11watts short with the 220 jobbie.

You could always just use what you have and see if it cuts out. Tell tail signs are you PC running very slowly and you hard drive making a clicking sound. IE, struggling to spin up.

Get yourself a 430W, you'll be fine running that rig.

The 220W is NOT gonna cut the cheese for your desired CPU+GPU upgrade.

One of my past rigs was a P4 2.4 @3ghz, 1gb ram, 6800GT 256mb, 2x HDDs, 1x Optical and I was running games like Doom 3 without fail.

Can you recommend a good PSU for me. Baring in mind I won't be overclocking and my pc is hardly killer... I just need something trustworthy that will keep me going for a while...

Hey there
I've currently got a 220 watts PSU, running the following components: Celeron 2.4ghz, radeon 9250, 512 MB RAM, 320gig WD hard drive, dvd drive, a monitor and some add on cards and a fan or two...

I'm looking to buy a 6800GT, another gig of RAM and a P4 of some kind - I know, hardly cutting edge, but then I don't mind playing games at low quality so It's fine :)

Is there any app I could use to figure out the power requirements or can anyone tell me how much power I'll probably need? I'd prefer not to have to upgrade at all - the PSU I mean - but obviously if I have to... Could I just buy the new components, plug them in, and then if it seems fine don't worry, or could this cause unseen damage? What problems would an underpowered PSU cause?

Thanks
Hey dude,
I've got a 500W PSU for R400 and I have two Legend 7600GT 256MB for R750 each. Maybe you'll be interested:

Ok I'll give the PSU calculator a go. Just btw, as I said, I've currently got an ATI Radeon 9250 128MB AGP. I'm looking to buy a LeadTek A400 (nVidia 6800) - also 128MB. How much of a performance upgrade is this?

Hi,

I am running a LeadTek A400TDH from the system I am using to post this thread. I upgraded from a GeForce 4MX, but I can guarantee the performance boost from a Radeon 9250 to a GeForce 6800 vanilla are tremendous.

As for your PSU - I would say go for a minimum of a 300 Watt PSU (which is fine considering you're going for a 350 Watt).

Good luck - it's a great card (although pretty dated, it can still pull its weight).

The IEC connector a PSU uses can handle somewhere in the range of 10amps and the monitor's IEC plug that comes from the PSU connects directly to the one supplying power, the monitor won't make a difference...

Unless you were talking about some other configuration I don't know about :D

Anyway back to the topic: Although 220W might be enough I very much doubt a PSU that's specs state 220W can provide even that much, and the 12v rail is the most important anyway. I'd say go for at least 400W PSU to be safe. If the PSU is underpowered it might start up and restart at random times (which can cook some of your hardware, it's happened to me when a Thermaltake PSU exploded) or it might not start up at all. In my opinion it's not worth the risk....
