Question about signal Strength

Hi,
I recently signed up with sentech as having moved house, Telkscum couldn't give me ADSL (lines were fibre).

So having spoken to Sentech I was told that I would have good coverage in my house. So, when it arrived, I set it up and I get around 12% signal on a good day. (sometimes down to about 6%). Sentech assured me that 12% is fine.

So my question is.... What effect does the signal strength have on my speeds? Is putting an antenna up going to help if my signal increases to say 35%?

No affect, signal strength not related to speed (or lack of it)

The highest I have ever seen the signal was around 45% and you know what, I still got torrents at a speedy 5K.

Is it just me or has it sucked more than ever these past two days?

Saul...you getting f$ck all with p2p?

Try changing your listening ports. On connection I get reasonable speed for about an hour, then it goes south...down to less than 1KB/s. Randomise the port number and speed goes up....for a while. May be that they are shaping, but not on the fly...

Hi Roddyp - You will find that with a signal strength of 12%, your signal will tend to fluctuate and you could get disconnected quite frequently.

What you will find is that your ber will improve from about 45% to above 70% which reduces packet loss and hence does have an impact on speed

I also had a signal strength of 12%, and I decided to install a decent dish antenna. Its been a pleasure using mywireless since then - well except for the speed problems we have been having - although the speeds have improved a lot lately.

thanks for all the help. I'm not getting disconnected too often and I've given up trying to use my extreme high-speed 256k package for anything else other than e-mail and browsing, so I don't really mind too much if i get disconnected
 
Robone, my experience was similar to yours - I tried several homemade antennas that easily produced 12% but suffered from packet loss - from when I put the permanent 28dbi up, packet loss and disconnects became history
