Questions about Sentech & NoWire

heh, amazing how something entirely reasonable wrongly presented can be so inflammatory. Hell, >I< got wound up when I read newb5000's post saying that he'd get charged for the firmware upgrade! But it's not the firmware that's being charged for- y'all are entirely welcome to copies of it gratis/verniet/nada!

It's for the guy's TIME which is an entirely different proposition- and eminently fair to charge for. Speaking as an on-call support tech, I'm generally quite happy to spend some time on the phone helping people out (within reason of course) but if I have to up and go somewhere to do a job you can believe I'm looking to be paid for it.

Out of curiosity, the technician told me that I would have to pay an extra R150 for him to do a firmware update on the modem, otherwise I have to do it myself.

That is exactly what he told me.

heh, amazing how something entirely reasonable wrongly presented can be so inflammatory.

I realise that it is that the R150 is for his time, I have never heard of companies charging for their firmware updates. I still think it is not right though because when I said that I can do it myself he asked me if I was sure that I knew what I was doing, because I could damage my modem. He made it sound like quite a complicated procedure, and not the simple "click on firmware update button". The procedure he used was: double click on a self extracting zip file on one of his *magic* cds, run the Wireless Broadband Modem Dialler, click update, wait, close it, double click on a second self extracting zip file on his *magic* cd, and do the same for that one.
I suppose that could be quite complicated for someone who is computer illiterate but I still think it's a cheap way to try to make an extra buck from the technician's side, especially if there is a simpler method that even a newbie can use.

Nevertheless, I didn't get charged for the firmware update in the end and I am happy with the service so far. I mostly get between 25% and 30% signal with no additional antena. My ping is around 190. I found an old antena lying around and I am going to try get my signal above 45% to start getting really good pings (hopefully). Rain doesn't interfere with my signal at all, the other day I was getting 29% signal while it was raining. The only thing that I don't like about it is the 60 sec international throttle, but where there is a will, there is a way :) My next mission is to get the modem to work under Linux. Any way that I can get it to work under Mandrake 10? I checked http://rodent.za.net/MyLinuxDrivers but that method is too complicated for me since I am a linux newbie :) )

Cheers,
newb5000

Edit: about that 190ms ping I mentioned, that is in CS:S on almost all of the SGS servers. Sometimes it goes down to 165, sometimes up to 220. It remains the same regardless of how many players are connected. On the other hand, if I ping www.sentech.co.za, it jumps around a lot but I would say average is 100-110ms:

Ping statistics for 66.18.65.124:
Packets: Sent = 13, Received = 13, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 54ms, Maximum = 194ms, Average = 107ms

Just a point in the callout/upgrade/delivery fee, each agent for NoWire has their own policy. What seems to be a common practice is to charge R150 for a callout fee to test signal. This is to cover the time (as BDT said) and the petrol, expensive equipment and so on. Agents often travel long distances and spend a long time getting to customers and if they DIDN'T charge anything, the whole busines becomes unviable. Basically the question comes down to "Do you want a knowledgeable (hopefully!) person to come to your premises, answer all your questions and determine categorically that you have signal or do you want to take a chance?"
In our case, if the customer takes a modem on the unbundled package, we waive this callout fee. If the customer takes the modem on the bundled package (where the modem is thrown in as part of the 2 year package), this fee remains, since there is a requirement for at least 2 trips to the premises plus sending faxes, phone calls etc. Agent earnings are not great enough to hand out a lot of freebies. I am sorry if it sounds mercenary but we all have to make a living.

HA HA HA I just cancelled Sentech... no more lies...

Anyway to whom it may concern... After dealing with an arrogant and rude Head of Customer Care Mr Ken Theron... who finally after much rudeness and stupidity finally decided to cancel my account I have found much to my humour that my sentech email is still working....

YUP! it seems they did not NUKE my account but rather something else to prevent me from logging on which makes me wonder... Anyway perhaps a reseller of Sentech would like to bring that up with the powers that be cuz I certainly aint want an email with the words SENTECH on it...

They have my modem and everything now... so yeah...

Perhaps the idiotic fux stix wanker of a techincal director Winston Smith can perhaps tend to this very very simple procedure... it would be great...

Maybe half there bandwidth is used my Sentech accounts still recieving EMAILS !!!!

HA HA HA HA

Cheers

Perhaps you could give out that old redundant Sentech addy of yours to as many spammers & junk mail sites as possible...:D

Back in the day when I used to email bomb, I used to specify the "from" address as the address I was bombing "to" as well. That way when it starts getting "error, mailbox is full" it loops to the guy i'm bombing to's email again :P

Winston Smith barely knows how to work a PC nevermind powerpoint.
