Hi there

I am using free radius hosting from worldspot.net and it seems to be working well!

My only concern is how much of my precious cap would a RADIUS server actually utilize...?

Thanks

Shouldnt be much, seeing that a radius server is used for authentication, authorization and accounting.

Well that really depends on the number of users that you are AAA'ing with it.... but I would class it as insignificant in comparison to other traffic.

The Radius server that i'm running hasn't gone above 300Mb in a month with hundereds of authentication requests per day.

I stand corrected - but I think that the web admin interface that I use about twice a month to update users is using more bandwidth than all the RADIUS requests :D

What are you going to do with the radius server then?

I need to monitor internet usage between many users on a network and the easiest way to do this would be by using a radius server ( worldspot.net)

How exactly does the radius record traffic? does it monitor each packet or something????

Ambo...how many gigz passes through your radius server? that way we can work out a percentage...

Thanks

10% is huge!!!!

why does it use so much!!

Is there a locally hosted freeradius?

Radius is not going to do what you want.
It is meant mainly for ISPs
Radius stores usernames and passwords and you authenticate against it. When you logoff accouting records are logged with how much traffic was used.

However its useless for a local lan, since there is no dialup or PPPOE authentication going on.

What you need is some kind of bandwidth/ip accounting program, but what you need depends on your network configuration, routers and switches used etc.

Well the problem is that I dnt know how many people will be on my network at any given time....so IP monitoring woudnt work because they could just change thier IP's.....

RADIUS would prevent un-authorized access to the internet......my cap isn't that big!!!!!
