With all the talk about the HD LCD TVs and variations on the different models, I wondered about the "older" Rear projection TVs ... do you still get decent Rear projection TVs, or are they all outdated?

They always looked super-crap to me.

Only ones I could find now are the Sony HD ones, but farking expensive!

The definition of those babies always looked, and still do, very blurry and undefined. Much rather jst get an +/-80cm flat-screen crt if i had to go retro.
Ooh, and the backlighting, so uneven!!

We had a Sony one in 2000, we sold it with the house!:p

They cool, resolution was good in the dark lol, nothing compared to Tvs today. It hard a wobbly plastic screen, it made a scratchy sound when you rub your fingernail across it!:p

I think the current day rear projections are not bad at all ... and they are not expensive ... well relatively not ... a 50" Sony SXRD goes for about R25k - R27k ... a 46" LCD goes for R30k - 40k and a 52" from 50k to 100k. LCD's are definately brighter ... but if you sit in front of the rear projection with your head positioned in vertically in the middle ... the colour and brightness are really good. Rear projections are still able to handle South African TV signals better than plasma or lcd.
