My wife has a Lenovo Ideapad S10e with a 1.6 Atom CPU and 512 MB ram and she's running Windows 7 smoothly, it came out with Windows XP and she tried Linux Mint for a while, but didn't like it (I actually thought it was great). So I had to install something else and tried Windows 7, to my surprise it worked great.

Maybe those many people don't think it sucks? What don't you like about it?

Not really. Many people choose to use Ubuntu, many people use Windows because that's what their computer came with, or that's what their company uses, or that's what they are familiar with.

Strangely #! also feels a bit 'snappier', dunno why that is.

Just for the record I did some comparisons and this is definitely not the case, I was wrong. Manjaro Openbox Lite is definitely faster than #!.

Maybe those many people don't think it sucks? What don't you like about it?

It's just slow and unresponsive when using Unity. I was so used to using Gnome shell with Fedora 17 and got used to hitting start to open the launcher to run apps. So I'd hit start and the type "screen" and enter to open Screenshot. With Unity I hit enter and then have to wait 2 - 3 seconds then type, if I type while it's still loading it doesn't register. It's not a huge list of issues but this one thing just makes me despise Unity and the hole is crawled out of.

Have you disabled online search results in the Dash?

At first I avoided Unity, but now it doesn't really bug me that much but then I don't really use the Dash. Typing to search for something only helps if you know the name of what you are looking for. I prefer the Gnome-style menus, so I install Classicmenu-Indicator.

Basically all of unity, even app launching is slow. It was basically unusable when I fresh installed using Noveau graphics drivers but after installing the proprietary drivers it became usable at least.

I decided to give Mint a bash as I like having the variety that comes with the Ubuntu/debian environment. I would like something that works out of the box, I'm getting old and my tinkering tendencies are growing less Ubuntu/Unity also had some window issues on mutli screen set ups (maximizing a window on the secondary screen sometimes forces it to maximize to the primary screen), so far haven't had any issues with Mint in this regard.

My first Ubuntu install was 9.04, back then I didn't know much about what was out there but after seeing the other options Ubuntu, release after release, has always had issues for me in some regard.

some of us have an obstinate gene called obnoxious; it makes us being renegades. Or a pioneering, adventurous spirit, perhaps?
