Recommendation for Macbook Air 11"/13" equivalent

The extra warranty is rather pricey, but its probably best to take it.
Also with osx, you're going to want at least 8 gigs of ram, with the air you cant upgrade the ram after you've bought it.

At least 8 gigs of RAM is a good bet regardless of OS. That said, I know many people happily chugging away on 4 gig airs.

And it's not just the Air - most (all?) Macs can't have RAM upgraded these days. And increasingly not just Macs now either - it's become a tradeoff for the compact size and clean lines, easy to make since the vast majority never upgrade their RAM anyway...

I found that Google Chrome is the biggest culprit, it also took up a lot of disk space, like in 6 gigs of space.

Chrome is a known memory hog, moved all my streaming and more intensive browsing over to Safari - much better. Mac even runs cooler using Safari - fan would often come on when streaming in Chrome, never in Safari.

I use Chrome for forums, email, etc.

I tried to like safari, but chro e is just a lot better for me anyway.

Funny though, when I had to sideload plex onto my now TV box, it wouldn't work using Safari but did using Chrome.

If your Mac is running hot on Chrome, select "Click to Play" in the Plug ins options under content settings. Usually its Flash content that causes your Mac to start running hot and consume a lot of memory. 4GB on the MBA is okay, but 8Gb is definitely better and a must if you consider running something like a Windows VM as well.

Was tempted by the extended warranty, especially since I had a Retina screen failure in my first month of ownership, but it has run without an hiccup since then. The US consumer research group did a study on extended warranties and found only 11% of people needed them, so hopefully I'm not one of the one in ten! Lots of reliability studies show Apple to be consistently up high in the rankings, unfortunately their hardware is better than their software, Yosemite's Wifi issues have been really crap..
