Hi

I am getting ADSL soon i am not sure what hardware to get.

I have 2 pc's that both need to be connected to the ADSL line
I am wanting to use the proxys to stop the 3gb cap then after i've tried the proxys i'll move over to a decap.co.za or a ods.co.za uncapped account. The one pc would be used msot for downloading and stuff the other pc in for browsing and email that pc isnt used that much. Also i have gigabit lan just if it would affect it.

Please advice on what modems and routers to get
Thanks

Jason,

By far the best modem I have come across is the D-Link DSL300G. It is an ethernet bridge type modem. I use it on my LAN, with a FreeBSD machine acting as PPPoE client and router. You can also use the Windows XP PPPoE client, or a PPPoE client provided by D-Link.

The DSL300G should not cost more than R750 at most retail stores.

If price is the biggest issue, you can go for any PCI ADSL modem, they start around R300.

PCI you say? I have been looking for a PCI ADSL modem for months now. The only model I have been able to find is a Genius one from by TVR in Durban but they have yet to recieve a licence for it so are unable to sell it. I have been forced to buy a USB version from Mustek (very weary of USB devices) and would be very intrested to hear if anyone knows where I can get my hands on a PCI device.

Hi Jasonhk

Need hub or switch to connect ADSL router to and from there you can connect different computers at once. Seeing as you only want 2 computers connected, you can easily do this by using PPPoE but you mention proxy. If you use an offsite proxy on the other side of the router you will not save bandwidth. If you setup a local proxy on your side of the ADSL router then you are looking at a winner. Having a linux box, with Smoothwall (firewall) and SQUID (caching proxy) will be an affordable solution if you have an extra PC (3rd PC) to spare, not to mention the adventures you will have controlling your own bit of cyberspace! If you can get your hands on Mandrake Multi Network Firewall (a pre configured Linux distro) you are set to roll out network security and proxying services in in minutes.

Thus your network setup may look something like this:

ADSL router >>> Hub / Switch >>> Firewalling and Proxying Computer >>> Two computers

There are dozens of different configs you can concider. Feel free to ask...

Antowan

I am a big fan of the Netgear DG834GUK
has built in wireless lan and firewall. Very reliable. Though its a bit more pricy

We have been recently reviewing proxima. Whom are more expensive but seem to have exceptionally good quality wireless lan equipment
