Remote desktop connection ?!?

Hi
what software is available 2 do a remote desktop connection on 2 pc's (in 2 different cities)(both with adsl lines) without having to dial up?
hope u guys get what i mean!

Hi Mas,

Hope i can help. If you are using windows XP, you can use the included remote desktop facility. You will need to enable it on the computer that you want to have remote access to. You can do this under control panel, systems, Remote tab, Remote Assistance.

If you are using a router on the remote machine, you'll need to forward tcp port 3389 to that machine. If your remote machine does not have a static IP, consider getting a free no-ip (www.no-ip.com) or other similar services, so you do not have to have to find out what your remote machine's ip is all the time.

To connect to your remote machine, just run remote desktop client located under start, all programs, accessories, communication, remote desktop connections. You will need to enter the remote machine's ip number (or its web address if you have one registered) as well as your account information on the remote machine. Here's a few things about the session:

1. There are options to make your local printer and disk drives available to the remote machine (only while you are connected). Sadly though, you can't copy and paste texts between the two machines.

2. If you run the client at full screen, to exit or minise the session you can move your mouse to the top of the screen and you'll see the control bar.

3. You can use every key combinations on the remote machine and it'll have the effect there, with an exception of alt-ctrl-delete which will bring up the Windows Security dialog on your LOCAL machine and not the remote machine. If you want to access the dialog on the REMOTE machine (eg to shut down a process) you should press alt-ctrl-end.

There are other tools like vnc that does a similar thing but I find the MS one a bit faster.

I also want to do this but dunno how to go about it.

We have ADSL and 2 networks joined together through wireless. Is it still possible for me to remotely connect to my pc? I am the on the network at the far end of the ADSL connection.

Hey eye_suc,

Thanks for the welcome. From what I know if you are able to reach the machine (say ping it) then you should be able to do remote desktop connection to it. You might have to play around with the firewall settings though if there is one or more separating your networks. Just make sure that port 3389 is accessible.

The problem is one pc is windows xp and the other is windows 98.
This wont work with window remote desktop facility.
wud it work with vnc?
Another question regarding this, do i need to sign up for an isp on both ends? the one pc im not gonna use to surf the net or for email or nething like tht.
the other end will have a isp! ive spoken to 2 guys and one says i need an isp and the other says i dnt need an isp. that was a great help! :)
 
Yep, VNC will work - there's versions for both platforms. Don't follow what the issue is with ISP's (should that be with or without an apostrophe?) - you said at the beginning that both locations have ADSL lines, which implies that they're both connected to a provider, either using disparate ISP's or the same one with a concurrent connection account. Either way, this should not impact on your objective...

You can actually copy n paste text, I do it all the time, but you cannot copy and paste files between machines
