Remove unused CSS like this

acid are you using a framework?
i did a frontend for a django site a while back and trying to skin it efficiently was painful.
it's not just the size that concerns me, it's the lack of structure and redundancy.
i think the less css experience developers have, the less they understand what inheritance means and the more they just put a style on every blooming element.
or perhaps the less you design a thing up front and think about presentation, the more you end up retrofitting it badly.

Nope, not using a framework, this was just in general from work I get from designers I outsource to clients. Usually in the design process there's a couple of changes or the designer has a hiccup with compatibility between browsers in the way he slices things up, which then, instead of taking the old styles out before doing the changes, he just adds on to them. This is also a very useful way in cleaning your css from unwanted styles before minifying it (I bolded that for a reason... to follow)

Great, so you insult someone into the ground and then you expect them to take you seriously afterwards?

You just have to read a few of your replies to threads in general to quickly realise that you clearly have a chip on your shoulder. You're very aggressive for no reason and you have no problem insulting others on the forum, you get personal very quickly and it's annoying. Stop being so sensitive. You started a thread about CSS cleanup so the idea is to welcome other people's opinions on the matter. The fact that they have a different opinion or disagree with you is not the end of the world and certainly not reason for you to throw one of your numerous little MyBB tantrums. Whoever visits this thread tomorrow will perhaps get 3 different approaches to cleaning up CSS and everyone wins.

You make it quite unpleasant with your constant insults and therefore derail some threads automatically. Lock yourself in a room and scream for 2 hours and then look in a mirror and tell yourself yourself how wonderful you are. That way we don't have to hear about it.

My answer to you is two-fold. This thread has been created to help those in cleaning their css from unwanted styles leftover. That's even before minifying the code. This was meant as a guide to those who asked the same questions previously (I was one of them a couple of months ago looking to clean unwanted css out of a huge css file)

This is a forum, everyone can do or say whatever they want (to a degree), but giving your "2 cents" to a clear cut "How To" guide when you don't even understand the concept or the reason FOR the guide, and just latch on to the first idiot who replied with "I use PageSpeed to minify it for me" who ALSO clearly does not understand or grasp this very concept... then I'd rather take the aggressive, holier than though route and try to (with a hammer) show them the err of their ways. I'm not here to ***** foot around people's feelings or emotional well being. The point of this thread was to cater for those who were looking for the same answer I (and hundreds of others, go Google and see or read the Dust-Me addon forum/comments a bit) were looking for.

I don't have time for idiots who troll forums and threads for post count and I don't even know why the hell I even bothered posting this How To guide on here because I was already 90% sure someone would turn this into something OTHER than the original post was intended for.

My posts in this sub-section of the forum are usually non-sarcastic and has a lesser degree of my "chip on the shoulder" attitude that I usually bring to other leisure activities. Seeing as though this is my profession and not some game I'm playing with other social retards (yes, I called myself a social retard in that little sentence over there, not afraid to admit it). I'm usually helpful, but it's slowly dawning on me that society in general does not want to be helped at all... even if fed the information with a golden spoon.

Thank you for YOUR 2 cents, but I'd recommend the same I'm going to recommend semaphore does (to follow)

I kinda agree with you, his posts and threads seem to have a holier than thou attitude to them.

As you have, by now, read, my attitude when gaming/leisure is different to that of when it comes to my job (or at least try to be more patient/willing to contribute;the point of this thread;/and helpful where I can). If you'd like to judge me on my other heated posts in the Health & Leisure forum and WoW. Go ahead. I would have thought by now you would at least know I don't give a **** what anyone thinks of me. And I'll more than likely say the same **** to your face. So much so that you'd probably end up just like the rest of the male(?) species who'd like to "settle this" with their fists after you find out that this is how I am IRL as well. Tough luck buddy.

There's an ignore button, use it. Please.

This would help you guys in future and it would help ME as well when I post a thread on How To CLEAN css files quickly and easily, to not taint it with your personal grievances you may have against me for pointing out to several of the respondents and their "2 cents" that they in fact are dumbasses for thinking that cleaning a CSS file is the same as minifying it.

I'm with Raithlin on this - this is a discussion forum and the point is to add your 2 cents if you feel like it. If you don't want comments, message somebody directly.

Just saw this and would have liked to add this onto my original reply but figured I wouldn't go as far with you because I kind of like you still. The point of the thread was a "How To" and didn't really call for any kind of opinions on "How To" do this because when I did ask this initial question, the only responses were to give me addon advice and point me to Dust-Me for FireFox.

That was all well and good, but working through a combined CSS file and literally removing thousands of unused styles would be a pain in the ass. The original idea was to have that be done automatically, but unfortunately, even though there were multiple requests for such a feature, the guys only could tell you which styles weren't used (including PageSpeed)

So by replying to this thread, something that works and is helpful if you ever need to do this, with your "Just minify it through PageSpeed" is kind of redundant when I never asked for help or never asked you opinion if this is the correct way of doing things. I can appreciate that the people who replied to this thread got confused with this, because it is very rare for someone to actually just post a thread which is helpful to the community without asking rather than sitting and waiting for someone to ask the question and then respond with "I did this a couple of months ago, can't remember now how I did it"

There's only a handful of people on this sub section of the forum who actually contributes like that. I appreciate your sentiment. But please go through my reply to semaphore and midrange... if you still feel that way

I'd also like to point out that there is a "Report Bad Post" button right next to the "Blog this Post" button at the bottom left of your screen beneath the end of each thread. I would like you to use that as well if you have any issues so that the mods can get jiggy with it if they feel things got out of hand.

So hopefully some sod would find this & PayPal me a donation for giving you this valuable information...
I just realised exactly where I can use this. I'm doing a redesign on a site that I didn't do (it was done initially in DW)... it'll come in very handy.

Now, if I only had a PayPal account...

lol... naw dude, I'm just happy to be able to PayPal and **** now... so if I was serious I'd have given it already. But I'm glad this information proved useful to someone. That was the point of this in the first place.

Hmmm... I'd save my money for now if I were you.

Although the tip is pretty handy, the high grand genius doesn't mention that it does not cater for inline styles.

@Acid: Seriously man - go ahead and make great suggestions to people, but remember there is never any harm in being humble about them - especially on a platform where there is NEVER only one way to skin a cat. Treat people as you'd want them to treat you - unless you want everyone locked in heated pointless and arrogant finger wagging competitions. Also - try not to seem like you've got the high ground on a discussion forum when your grammar, spelling and general semantics need some serious work. I'd suggest spending a little less time in the World of Warcraft and perhaps a little more in the real world where you'd get to know people face to face.

Just my 3 cents there - had to account for inflation (of ego).

Shot AcidRaZor, that combination almost halves my CSS files.

For those hunting here's the websites:
Dust-me
minify

Note: I picked up some false positives from dust-me-selectors with CSS sprite navigation, particularly the a.xxx-a style one, so be carefull. It also helps to use the spider sitemap.
