Router setup to get to 500mbps

Makro currently has the M4 on special. I'd just go with this.


Get a new router while you're at it. The AX3 is crap, it was made for people who use default configs and just want some WiFi at home. Anything that requires some network customisation and you're out of luck. Forget about setting DHCP reservations for printers etc.

I tossed my parents Afrihost special for the same reason and just got them a basic gigabit router with a Deco mesh...

Look it's obviously no MikroTik or anything but you definitely can set static IPs, I have at least 5 of them set on mine.

I'm not buying anything from Makro after my last experience with them but Takealot has a similar bundle and I do have some vouchers... :unsure:

It doesn't need to be a MikroTik, but it should at least provide you with the basic functionality that routers have had for the past 2 decades...

The vast majority of people (myself included) don't need that. The AX3 is superior to all the other el cheapo ac wifi routers ISP's hand out.

Not true regarding DHCP reservations: you can reserve an IP address for a MAC address:

While it doesnt have all the features of a Mikrotik, if you are on Afrihost and want ipv6 support, it works really well.
There also aren't speed issues Ive come across. I can hit 500mbps no problems (Openserve Max). Up time is excellent. I can setup port forwarding.
The only missing item I have found that average users might need is setting up custom DNS at DHCP level. But you can still setup manual on the individual devices.

bob for the win as I have cat5e supplying all my AP's and get over 500 megs to my NAS from any point in the house and around - 3 ap's 450sqm floor space, >900sqm erf

bob dont bother mentioning cat5 as it just confuses people - your right, but its antiquated, hopefully ;)

cat6 and higher only better if installed properly - can be worse if not

Does anything work connected directly? Like a laptop?

If not you are on an old school fibre setup where your ONT is locked to the MAC address of the other router and needs to be released to make use of the new one.

Incorporating Deco’s means no using the AX3.

I would just get some more HUAWEI devices. Whichever ones you can find cheapest.

I am using my Zytek router / modem that connects to my fibre then have my 3 decos running on AP mode around the house, wouldnt that be better? The main deco runs via cable into the Zytek so wouldnt access point be better and not router and if you say router , why?

Not really better or worse either way.

I would imagine the TP-Link has better software than the Zytek and would have just chucked it out personally so I have one single platform to manage.
