Hi All,

Is SATA 300 backwards compatible with the standard SATA 150 ?ie: Can I plug one of the new hard drives onto my old motherboard?

Yes you can run SATA 150 drives on SATA 2 ports. I am doing that ATM. Running a SATA Seagate 160GB drive on SATA 2. No Problems plus it is hot swapable just like USB or Firewire.

I think he means, can he plug a SATA-300 hdd into a SATA-150 mobo. Right?

Oops sorry didnt read the question properly. But as far as I know it should work fine. Like with USB 1.1 and 2.0 The 2.0 device still works with the older ports just slower. With the HD it wont even be slower because HDs only transfer at a max of around 70MB per second and that is for the WD Raptor drives. SATA 150 therefore has double the speed you could require.
 
Yes sata 300 is backward compatible with sata 150. So basically you can plug your sata 300 drive into a sata 150 slot.

Any1 got any idea how to get a sata 2 drive to work on sata 2?
 
Find the right driver!

Plug it in.
install the driver
use partition magic 8
goto hardware manager
enable NCQ
simple

I promise you its not faster the sata at all. Exactly the same. Latencies transfers the work. no improvement. NCQ only makes multitasking and server apps a little more fluid and responsive.
