Schoeman -- and the OP -- is profoundly wrong. Why should athletes, especially professional ones, be carried by the taxpayer?
You're not reading correctly. Nowhere do I say SASCOC, you, or anyone else can't donate money to support athletes. Of course they can.
What I and many others object to is doing so from the public purse.
LOL! What planet do you live on? The US, Australia, China, Germany, France. . . Just about every nation involved at the Olympics receives a portion of its budget from the state. The major nations do however have the luxury of sponsors willing to pump money into their athletic associations. We struggle to fund our athletics programmes as sponsors would rather focus on rugby, cricket and football. And as mentioned, SASCOC(K) receives it's budget primarily from the government.
