Seagate buys Maxtor!

i just hope that won't affect seagate, maxtor is crap, went through 4 or 5 drives, in just more than a month, got seagate, no problem as yet, that was about 2 years ago

I've been using and selling Seagate and Maxtor and other drives for 15 years now. Never had a problem with any of them, except for a Fujitsu which was a part of that huge batch of faulty Fujitsu drives.

The days of Connor Drives gobbled up by Seagate, now Maxtor

Thankyou Seagate, take away all the crap - PLEASE buy out Fijitsu & Bangsum (Samsung) Horrid drives!.

Where do we stand with Western Digital as they're less than reliable for some time now. THERE IS ONLY ONE - SEAGATE!

Don't praise Seagate too much. I have had problems with seagate and maxtor and IBM. Bottom line is that competition is good. If all the other drive manufacturers dissapeared seagate would be in a position to charge what the market will bear....which will be pretty high.

I run 4 Maxtor drives atm. All 4 running great. In my experience I have noticed drives tend to last long when they are taken care of propperly. Some times it can crash, this is true of any hardware. Love your hdd's and they will love you back :D

New, suggested names (as found on the Smoothwall forums)

Maxgate or Gator... :D

Hope Seagate's quality doesn't go down... but it seems that this is heading towards a monopoly....

I'm running both Maxtor and Seagate. In the beginning the Maxtors would give problems, but once I sorted this out (it was either the molex or the data cable connection) I've never had a problem with Maxtor.

Your mileage may vary tho... suggestion is not to stick the hard drive into a case with poor or no ventilation, the hard drive will overheat. Ever felt how hot the new drives is running?

i definately won't miss Maxtor... crap drives, doesnt matter how carefully you handle them - too many customer complaints with those drives.

Another Guilty one (sadly) is Western Digital - however they say most of the problems is due to bad handling during export and dispatch to dealers here in SA... the same could be true of Maxtor - just too late, i just won't take the chance ever again with those.

Seagate, ye - had problems with them - but FAR less than with Western Digital & Maxtor & Fujitsu...

Western Digital seems to have mayor qaulity control issues. Had a 120Gig drive which was really bad. Motor Failure, can still occasionally access it and is still trying to get some info of it. Almost have 95% back. However replaced it with a 250 Gig Western Digital Sata 2 I think. My board only support Sata 1, but this thing is definitely much faster than the previous drive. So yeah Western Digital either give problem in the first month or 2 or run a while after that it seems

I don't think it's as much of a problem as it used to be what drive you use.

I had a seagate 1gig HD for 3 years before portable mass storage like CD's became available. I used to bung it in my backpack, dropped it a few times and it still worked.

I had another identical one which failed within six months.

Maxtor - their 80gig drives of a certain model were rotten.

But from what I have gathered, hard drives are a little like silicon chips - you get good ones and bad ones - there's never a 100% guarantee that you'll get one or the other, it's down to luck.

If you want true reliability at a cost, use more expensive laptop hard drives - designed to be portable and thus far more durable.

I bought a Samsung 80G drive a few months back and have had zero problems with it (holding thumbs :) ). Luck of the draw ?

I ommited to mention that I'm also using a Samsung 80Gb HDD... that thing is so quiet you barely hear it working. No problems so far.

Ive still got one of those maxtor 40gb quiet drive's and i have never had a problem with it
Yep, those 40GB are nice and quite, compared to the 160, 80 and 60 that i'v also got

Interesting - anybody else have anything good to say about BangSome? (samsung)

One of the problems with the Seagate drives is that the newer models no longer longer support "Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM)" and as such can be fairly noisy.

Seagate is/was involved in a patent infringement lawsuit with MIT and Convolve, over algorithms used in their AAM firmware and as such has disabled AAM support in their drives.

Hopefully we will see Seagate make use of Maxtor's AAM technology and not Maxtor removing support for AAM.

the problem with maxtor is that their drives tend to die just after the warrantee! and they only offer a 1 yr warrantee! They do however outperform seagate
