My lady friend wants to sell her laptop.

I have no idea what these thing are worth will you please give me an estimate.

Don't listen to these folks. Look at refurbished laptops online, even at the Classifieds section here, you could easily get R4500 for that laptop and some people will pay with a smile

Yeah dunno what I was thinking, L2 has no effect at all on performance, nor does FSB bandwidth :/


New laptops with a 1MB L2 cache, 533MHz FSB and 533MHz DDR2 RAM (the RAM on this is only DDR 333MHz) can be had from around R5500, just don't see this one going for R4500 unless the buyer is really gullible. RAM is cheap - 512MB = R250-R300.

That 1MB doesn't mean much if you're comparing the Sempron to a Celeron-M. I wouldn't go as far as saying the Sempron will outperform the Celeron-M (although it probably will ) but they're at least comparable. Also, the 128k is L1 cache, which, i.i.r.c. is more than anything Intel has. It has L2 too - can't remember how much, I think it's 256k.

And to echo teraside's advice, good secondhand laptops go for good money. You still pay R3000 for a high-spec P-III which won't come close to this one.

Current Celeron M's are effectively last generation's Pentium M's (newer Pentium M's run a 2MB L2 cache, previous generation ran a 1MB L2 but the core archiecture is basically identical), but without the rest of the Centrino package, i.e. the only difference will be in power consumption.

Problem is that due to Intel's previous marketing of the Celeron as a budget processor, everybody now associates Celerons with sub-par performance, and who can blame them - Intel stuffed up in the past. However things have changed and the current Celeron M's are a good bang for buck processor. Clock speed for clock speed, it's identical to the previous 1MB L2 Pentium M processor which was part of the Centrino package.

Therefore there's no way that the Sempron for sale in this thread will perform better than a new Celeron M running at the same clock speed. I still maintain that R3000-R3500 is a pretty reasonable price to keep both buyer and seller happy, considering that brand new better performing laptops don't cost that much more.

I do have a natural soft sport for the underdog, and as far as server performance goes (where most of my interest lies) AMD still kicks Intel butt.

Actually, I prefer a PPC chip in my box, but that's another story... But seriously, my next notebook will be an C2D.

They're not identical. The current Celeron-M is based on the Dothan core (which means it lags far behind the Core and Core 2 processors). Dothan has architectural improvements over the Banias core (the original Pentium-M). So even though they have the same size L2 cache, the Dothan core Celeron-M is more powerful than the first generation (Banias core) Pentium-M. Not hugely, though.

Agreed. One thing to keep in mind though, is that Intel's processors (the Pentium-M family less so than the Pentium-4) is dependant on a big L2 cache. And they have tiny L1 caches. You need a lot of L2 cache to offset a small L1 cache, and the AMDs have big L1 caches.

The "new" Celeron-M is old, at least as old as the Sempron. And the Sempron has the powermanagement goodies that the Celeron-M lack. If I was in the market for a secondhand or low-end notebook, the Sempron would have my vote.
