Hi

I'm a real beginner here, so please be gentle...[:I]

I've spoken to Telkom support and my ISP support, but everybody seems stumped. I also browsed this forum (not extensively I admit) but couldn't find any answers. If I didn't look hard enough, my apologies.

Downloading is cool, but I can't seem to upload anything bigger that 1kb! I've tried 3 different FTP programmes and 2 different email programs, all give the same problem... and yes, passive mode is off.

However, everything works fine on a dial-up.

I'm using an old computer and Windows 98, but surely this shouldn't make a difference? Is there a simple setting on my system that I'm missing... any ideas welcome... except the one about buying a new machine [:D]

Cheers

Brian

I am having the same problem uploading to an FTP. I am trying to update my website and every upates takes over 2 minutes. It seems I cannot achieve more than 500 bytes except jpg's, they upload a bit quicker. I was about to contact the Admin on the FTP site, but as you are having the same problem, it must be then Telkom's side. It is really slow. If Telkom have isolated FTP on their Ports, they need a rap over the knuckles. How do I operate my business properly if I cannot upload to the FTP Server the files for my Website. I can't host my own Website because of the Dynamic IP's imposed by Telkom. So what must I do. Go back to ISDN or 56k. This country is going backwards with Telkom. Its a total disgrace.

Wow guys, there must be a problem with your settings.
Being ServerAdmin I upload a hell of a lot (CuteFTP) and very rarely does my upload drop below 30KB/sec regardless of what file it is or what server it is.
This is probably the sole reason I'm still hanging onto my ADSL.

Well I do a lot of FTP'ing (also with CuteFTP and sometimes WSFTP) as I am involved in a number of South African music sites and I need to upload often including mp3s (legal ones) and I was hoping ADSL was going to be my solution, but it's not yet!

When you talk about settings, which settings and where? Everything works fine with a dial-up which I fortunately have otherwise I'd be really stuck.

Hi Proasm and Brian,

Ok, I have never really fiddled with my FTP as it normally works fine. I use Frontpage for my Webpage and I use the FTP part of Total Commander to upload to the Server. I never had this problem before. Only when I was capped. But I am not capped, so I am not sure. The settings are all Automatic and I have taken Passive off like Brain suggested. I even unloaded my Firewall and Anti Virus Scanner to see if that was the problem. No Go. So anything else to suggest. I will try Leap Ftp aswell, but I think its could be Telkom.

Ok. Update. I just downloaded off the same server at full ADSL speeds no problem. But uploading is the problem. I just tested it also using Leap FTP and the same thing happened. Uploads are slow, but downloads are fine. BTW as before jpg's upload OK. 15 or so kb.

Brian, I too just install CuteFTP as is, I dont set any settings or anything - everything is default except I uncheck the splash screen :)
I'm still using CuteFTP v4.0 as does what I need.
My PC (Xp Pro) is connected to my Server PC (W2K) using WinRoute Pro which inturn works into my NetGear DG814 ADSL Modem.
Before Xp, I also had W98 and that too worked great.
Hell if my local uploads drop below 26 KB/sec I get straight onto the blower to Telkom.
My other website in USA, I average about 10 to 20 KB/sec but thats understandable.

If you like as a test, change your username and password on the ftp site and mail em to me and let me try from here and see what I get.
