Can a person set up a router-modem DIRECTLY to your LAN card and then out to the net??..I ask this because i have tried it with a cross-over cable as well as a straight cable with no success...If i however, connect my router to a hub, which in turn is connected to my LAN card, everything works a-ok....Is this normal??..tia

This is not normal. You should be able to connect to the router with a normal CAT5 cable. The switch merely acts as a bridge or repeater in your case. There should be no difference between connecting directly or indirectly like with the switch.
