Is it only messed up when you're printing discs? Does normal paper/photo printing work fine?

I'd go for a Canon as well. Though - that said - I personally go for those cheap R299 Lexmark specials and through them away when I need to get ink. Works out cheaper for me *shrug* For photos I go to the Kodak CNA thingy and pay R2. Canon has a small photo printer (only for printers) that doesn't use ink > it's a dye or something. Works out to R3 a print and looks exactly like a photo.
I'll never buy another HP product. Spent R5000.00 on the first HP Photoprinter with LCD screen etc etc, used it about 4 times to test before it was just sitting idle for over 2 years. One day in an emergency I printed for the 5th time and the screen is simply white. Now I know I don't NEED the screen, but it was the feature I liked most! Now it's stuck in my cupboard ...
Also, about 2 years back I bought a cheap HP scanner (for home and fun) and it died after about 10 times (over the space over the 2 years).

Have a look at the bottom of the disc tray and see if there's any damage. That's about all I can think of. Try setting aligning like I said previously. Once you get it right !!!WRITE IT DOWN!!! Just in case you need it for future reinstalls or whatever.

Got a canon ip4200 from Game for R999.
Works great, have not tried to print on cd's though.

are you using the canon printer drivers and did you install them correctly?
and it might seem a stupid question but are you using printable cd's?
If in doubt go through the setup proceedure again as the manual tells you and do all the pointless calibrations etc.
I have a IP4200 and only use it for printing onto cd's and have never had any problems except when i tried to adjust inner circle to get a fuller print.That was my error and has since been sorted out.
